They even did it during toyota photo shoots

You can’t teach somebody not do do stupid things … they just need to learn when they are doing idiot things and not do it again

I suppose since Toyota designed the bezel so it CAN be installed either way, it probably never mattered. If they would have designed it with a bolt pattern to only go on one way, there would be no dispute.

the early ones, 62-64? had LANDCRUISER stamped into the wide section, it would look rather stupid upside down

Really there is no dispute when you orientation the bezel wrong the toyota emblem is no longer centered as seen in the above picture

And the later models that came with the hood release … the release will be exposed when the bezel is orientated wrong

Actually, if Toyota would have kept the stamped bezel for the series, that alone would have told the tale of proper positioning. My 1969 has no stamping and no hood latch so it can go either way with no telltale issues.

it can go either way but as @JohnnyC said above the word TOYOTA is centered in the opening if it is installed with the wide bar on top

I suppose it is like looking at something and never noticing. I now see it is not centered vertical however I would never notice. Toyota is still prominent on the grill. Always something to learn.

When Toyota was installing the stamped LAND CRUISER bezel there was no Toyota emblem in the grill. When the one stopped the other one started.

My uncle picked up a brand new 1973 Toyota Landcruiser from the Yoshiwara plant in 1973 and the bezel was "upside down" I don't think it was ever changed even when he brought it back to the US.

A moderator should do a mud search and find out when this topic first came up 😂.

Now this reason is new to me(the hood release)--but it makes perfect sense--there have been many past posts claiming the 'Toyota" logo would be uncentered if the bezel were turned 'upside down'--on my 77, if I turned the bezel so the thick part was on the bottom, the logo was closer to center(by 1/2") than if it was on the top--so don't know where that came from-maybe my grill behind the bezel with the logo was turned upside down-(but it kinda like can't do that)-or the toyota name plate mount holes were moved by the PO---I just keep it on the top so the Bezel police don't get me---but johnnyC's post gives a logical reasoning for the thick side up--

I wonder how hard it would be to buy a 20 series front fascia and install it. Honestly the no bezel look is kinda cool. I saw it on a 45 troopy and it looked amazing.

That or getting a stamped bezel, even though it’s not correct for my year.
