larger vendors ($OR, CCOT or Cruiser Corps)

I have developed a set of double wire hose clamps in stainless steel for all the Cruiser sizes. The screw and the wire sizes are the same as Toyota. I know some of you will think it's cool, while others will say "I don't give a rat's a**" :hillbilly:

As you might have noticed, I'm working on my thermostat housing and snapped the bolt :crybaby:

Bummer!

I have a four-bolt thermostat housing from a 60-series that I'm going to replace mine with, next time I have to work on it for any reason.

Are the heads sized to JIS wrench sizes ?
Sarge

No these take a standard wrench or flat head screw driver. The objective here is not so much reproduction as it is utility. As I discovered, the mould for the OEM JIS type you are talking cannot be used to make stainless, as it is quite old.

soooo... you want to take on a new project? These are the boots off my 67 fj40 wipers (fits early to 67 single motor wipers). Most are deteriorated pretty badly and people run their wipers without them. I am in the middle of fully restoring mine so I took these off and cleaned then up. Mine are in good enough shape where you can use them as a mold or something.

I don't think I have that option, because the upper housing for a '79-'80 is unique to those years and slopes upward.

Hmmm... I'll have to compare the two closely - I may have the same problem, since mine is a 1980 (12/79 build date).

Hey man. My uncle is a die maker. He could probably machine a mold out of thick aluminum plate. You would probably have to get a good mat, then make a blue print of it.
I've been looking into it, but I doubt it'll happen in the near future. I consulted a PhD scientist who worked on PVC products for BF Goodrich. He walked me through how such a floor mat can be made. It requires a large mold and the whole thing has to jell into shape at once. You can't simply take an existing sheet of rubber and stamp it, because the grids on top will be very shallow.

I also had an IM exchange with Gabe on this board, who works for Toyota. My understanding from him is that these mats were made by a department within Toyota, rather than by an external supplier. His sources said that the mold may have been scrapped already.

The other challenge is from the business end. Most floor mat manufacturers don't want to do this project. There is too much work and not much return for them. It's way more profitable to make smaller, universal floor mats that you see in auto stores.

Despite the above, the fat lady hasn't sung yet. I'm discussing a couple of approaches with my manufacturing partner. At this point I just can't tell how things are going to turn out.

I can just about guarantee that bolt will break when you turn it. I did this job 18 years ago on another '80 FJ40 and the same thing happened. However, as I recall it was not too difficult to get it out with an extractor bit.
The '79-'80 housings are discontinued, and the other housings are probably not too far behind. That's why I always tell people to pick up the T-housings asap.

My '73 has the same OEM chrome handles you speak of. The picture I posted is of my '74... I'm beginning to think '74 is the only year that had this style. Anyone know for sure?

Martyn, you have 2 different kinds of OEM door pulls in the same Cruiser...? Are BOTH doors original to that rig?

Actually, they aren't. So that must be it. They are the old style doors but the original to vehicle door has chrome and replacement has the strap type pictured. A PO replaced one at some point when the passenger side took a beating. Never even thought about that being the reason they were different. Duh!
