Hi all,

I'm hoping the ih8mud brains trust could provide a bit of direction in regards to turbo recommendations for a 4.1L direct injected 15B-F.

I would like to find something that spools early as it cruises at about 2000rpm, and up to 2600rpm at 110kph. The rig will be used as a daily driver, tow vehicle (eg: 1ton box trailer full of wood) and wheeling rig so having a responsive turbo at low rpm all the way up to about 3000rpm would be preferred.

I previously ran a Garrett GT2052 on my 3B and it was a great match and fun to drive. I believe @Dougal was responsible for the research going into that recommendation. I have also been directed to this thread (also by @Dougal) with regards to teh 3.9L Isuzu engine - 4BD1T- turbo sizing : 4BD1T Turbo Sizing and Performance Prediction. which gives lots of in depth information but i'm still not sure that this will suit the exhaust pressure of a 4.1L engine.

I was planning on using a factory turbo exhaust manifold and I also wanted to run a front mount air-to-air intercooler as well.

Thanks,

Andrew

@Dougal , I've finally at a point where i'm about to purchase a turbo and have decided on a Holset HE221W with 7cm housing due to the sizing for where I need to put it (low mounting it).

I'm having trouble though finding part numbers which indicate the larger compressor wheel size (44.2mm?).. do you have any hints to find the right one? My next step is to catalogue the variants and their applications to try and best guess prior to ordering.. any help would be greatly appreciated

Well I'm back on this bandwagon... I've catalogued potential suitable HE221W model numbers here:

An update on my setup. I'll be running a 15BFTE low mount manifold (CT26 turbo flange), FMIC with 3" piping and a 3" exhaust. I want to run about 20PSI boost..

My short list is Holset HE221W 4047745 4047746 HE221 (7cm) - https://www.benzforce.com/products/holset-he221w-4047745-4047746-he221-7cm but I can't find any turbine specs on the 4047745 so not sure.

Is this a good candidate for my application?

Update: Very happy with the turbo choice and have dyno sheets too. Only adjustments on the dyno were 3/4 turn of the fuel screw.. no boost compensator adjustments yet (access was difficult).

Can't tell exactly which line is the A/F. Presuming it's the red that goes all the way to the top in the first graph. If so you've got way more boost than you need and backing it down will give you more go for the same fuel.

It takes power to pump extra air and you've got a lot of extra air. The Holset may be set to 20psi.

I'm pretty sure the top too lines are the AF ratio in that top graph. The boost was set by the turbo at 20PSI and the increase in fuel resulted in a slight increase. Not sure how to change the boost..adjust the spring or the rod for the wastegate?

You can really hear the induction noise at the snorkel when on the gas.. the fuel economy has been great, even on 35's with a heap of bar work added. I'm consistently seeing between 10.7 and 11.3L/100KM for each fill.

The bits I got from Benzforce

I wanted a lowmount as I have boosted clutch master and wasn't sure of clearance with a hi-mount manifold. this is off a 15BFT (with EGR port) and suits a IHI turbo.. I had assumed it would be a CT12 pattern but was wrong

I had moved my engine back as far as possible to suit the 80 chassis and BJ73 firewall on the FJ55 body.. this mean the dump pipe didnt have clearance to the firewall.

So I made an adapter to make the turbo sit further forward, so a 3" dump pipe could fit.

all finished and working with a 300x600x76mm FMIC and 3" piping/exhaust

My turbo oil drain is less than ideal being a -12 that goes down at a 45deg angle and snakes around the oil filter but so far its been ok.

Theres enough power to twist the spline on a drive shaft under "normal" driving.. 3.7:1 gears in diffs, on 35's with a H55F see's 110KPH in 5th doing 2400RPM.

Thank you for posting this up. I recently acquired a 15bf and will be going down the same rabbit hole. Was a high mount manifold an option in terms of availability? Would you happen to have a part number?

You're welcome just sorry it took so long to do. I've been running this setup for well over a year now and only just rediscovered my post. I just checked japan-parts.eu for Dyna100/200 and coasters for factory manifold part numbers. You can just see the partnumber of the manifold on the box - 17141-58070. Whistle-n-Soot do 15BF high mount manifolds, and I think you'll find stuff on ebay/alibaba too.. a few mobs in Thailand are pumping out bulk manifolds there..

Reducing wastegate preload will help. That's by lengthening the wastegate rod.
I like to test wastegate actuation with a bike pump and pressure gauge first. Normally they'll open a few psi below the bike-pump test when you're driving because you also have exhaust forcing the flap open.

If your engine is turbo spec and your drivetrain can handle it I'd just increase fuelling to make use of the boost.

If your looking for a Whistle-n-Soot setup in the USA or Canada. We are their distributor in the Americas! Let us know what you are interested in.....even if possibly as we are trying to determine what is best to stock. We currently have 2H, H, and 3B in stock. I attached the WNS pdf file if anyone needs it!

Great products, personally installed 4 of them on the aforementioned engines. Great quality, fit up and support! If your in the TN area and would like it installed for you, we can help with that as well!

I don't see a 15bf manifold offering on the PDF.
