turbo like whine noise when cold

As a follow up, my LC is at the dealer receiving service for this problem as I type. A friend's family owns the dealership and he's doing me a favor by diagnosing the problem free of charge. I will post the findings as soon as they become available. It'd be nice to get to the bottom of this, once and for all.

lhommec13, i don't have the engine/drivetrain whine. i just have the squeak in the steering wheel. anyways, i am interested in what the dealer found or did not find.

thanks

My 62 also had a squeak in the steering wheel... like the plastic housing was rubbing.

I'm curious to see what the dealer finds regarding the "turbo" whine.

Heh, I have the same steering wheel squeak as well and I have been accused of passing gas more than once due to it...

I also have the "turbo whine" noise on cold mornings. I just posted a reply in this thread: https://forum.ih8mud.com/100-series-cruisers/347269-drive-train.html

I'm a little worried since mine seems to be more harsh than a "turbo like whine". Has anyone figured this one out?

Mine was coming from a failing alternator bearing...

I'd be happy with that, considering all the other bad things that could cause a noise such as this. I have thought about that alternator, but when troubleshooting, the sound seems to be coming from under the Cruiser. On the warmer mornings, the noise goes away before I even have a chance to find it.

I think this is pretty common. Our 2000 LX does it. I think it is gear whine from the transfer case when the fluid is cold.

Is it coming from the passenger side of the vehicle? Have you checked the passenger seat? My wife whines like crazy when it's cold! :)

I always just thought it was something in air box assembly when it got cold making a whistling sound from the plastic contracting and stuff....never really worried but it goes away just a couple miles down road.

Since it seems that my whines when it is a little warmer than most, I am gonna change the Xfer case fluid out to be safe. I will report back if anything changes.

HAHA!
Does this mean it could be related to the passenger side seat heater?!?!? Since the whine you speak of also quits as soon as the seat heater gets warmed up! LOL :D

Yea I am a little less worried given the fact it happens to so many others, but it still a bit strange that it happens at warmer temps than everyone else. It did not whine last winter at all even while camping in 20 degree F weather.

Normal, my 2000 does it also, below 32 degrees out. Nothing to worry about, find something else on vehicle to obsess over :)

...like the 4.7 piston slap. got a teensy bit for the first 10 seconds when below 40. No where near as bad as the 3.5 in the ES350.

what revs are you at with your auto and right foot?
Sounds good.

here's something i recorded today on my iPhone 3G - windows up, you only get to hear first second and third gear (i was slow off the mark from the green light as i was f'ing around with the iPhone so i took off fast as it was busy) - had to slow down as it was only 70km/h zone and there were two cars in front of me and i caught up with them pretty quick....and 3rd you can hear me slow down. I was holding the phone in my left hand (gear change hand)

And the full version (3MB) is here, with my aftermarket GPS beeping warnings of the speed cameras and red light cameras coming up and i'd thrown the iPhone onto the dashboard so the GPS beeps are annoyingly loud. I do get into 4th gear. And listening back, it's amazing how quiet it is compared to some of your videos i've watched.

Sorry, yes i need to get a video up for you.

I still have the best "turbo" whine :D

YouTube - Landcruiser Turbo (not really)

Mine is constant, every time I step on the gas it whines. I have had multiple shops look at it and they can't find the origin. It gets annoying sometimes, but with the windows down, boy it sounds like a turbo. Just no blow off valve... or extra power

anybody else have it this bad?

Temp-48*
Engine Temp- 188*f
been on the road for 2 hours
Not coming from radio or speakers, I can rule that out my rolling my window down.
not the transmission/diffs, does it in park and neutral

I had everything off in the video. Windows up, AC off, radio off, etc. It wasn't that bad a few years ago. Seems to be getting worse (well, thats quite obvious)

i've listened to this over and over and the sound changes when the throttle and auto changes gears. I have NFI about the LC/LX autos but could it be something from that?
If it's getting louder then thats a worry.
I'll drop in to Outback 4WD where i get my LC serviced this morning and ask.
I had to cancel my service, but now i have finally got a job again (touch/knock on wood) i need to re-schedule it anyway.
cheers

I have what seems to be the same "turbo whine" in my 99LC. Definitely seems to be linked to acceleration or putting the engine under load. Take your foot off the gas (even under very light acceleration and it dies right off). I'd really like to know what it is as well. Right now, I just pretend its a secret turbo.:rolleyes:

I have that turbo sound too but it's not as loud and goes away when I step on the gas.

Add
Mine to the list. My 1998 has it too. Haven't been able to figure out what it is.

clean your power steering pump reservoir filter ever?

Mine is definitely intake manifold air whistle. Almost the sound a car would make if someone installed a CAI with an open cone filter, but mine whistles with the air whoosh
