I have a 2000 TLC w/ almost 126k, it makes a wining noise for about 30sec while driving down the road during cold weather. I've had it since 90k mi, done my 90k, and 120k on time with the correct weight gear oil for the diffs and t case using vavoline products, and drain/fill the tranny with toyota ATF every 10k. Has anybody had this problem before with the wining noise during cold weather? i always check my atf during fill ups and my diffs and t case every 3k during oil changes and the last time i checked (123k) the gear oil was clean and full w/ no burn smell, and i've checked the TSB and found nothing related. please help if you can thanks. :)

my makes a whining noise that seems to be coming from the right side during cold weather...i've repacked my bearing and flushed out my power steering fluid and i've still got the noise- i still think its coming from my powersteering pump as if it has some sort of morning sickness

Mine has been making the same noise since 50k? I took it to the Dealer they put a brand new Transfer case in under warrenty at 50k. I now have 88k the noise is still their. It normally lasts the firts three minutes after start up in the cold.

Ok then that sounds relieving, Im just a bit suspicious since 2000 a known for tranny failer, thats the last thing I want.

mine, as well as many others do this. As TM said in post 3. Its normal, gear whine happens when the t-case is cold, don't worry. Just drive normally and it'll go away.

Synthetic Gear oil helps.

Ok, digging this one up from a ways back, but better than creating a duplicate thread.

I seem to be having the same issue, if you can call it that. However, the noise my LC makes sounds more like that of the notoriously failure prone Ford power steering units of the mid-90s (is anyone else familiar with this sound?). This tends to worry me since the noise I am hearing seems to be more harsh than the typical "turbo whine" noise that many Cruiser owners compare their sound with. I have all the same symptoms, only happens on cold mornings (PHX AZ cold that is so temps at around 50 degrees F), and is gone within 5-8 minutes of normal driving.

Has anyone gotten to the bottom of this yet? It seems my noise occurs at much warmer temps than everyone else and is much more harsh...

T-case whine in the cold is normal, as are steering groans.

Thanks for the heads up on this... as it's been getting progressively colder out, the last two mornings have been well below freezing, and I noticed a whining sound coming from the T-Case or at least that's what it sounds like. This is normal then, right? It goes away once the truck warms up. I just replaced fluid with oem toyota fluid in March 2010 and have about 12,000 miles on it since then. Can anyone second that this is okay, or should I have it looked at?

Normal.

A synthetic fluid will reduce the whine and improve performance when really cold. (-14 degrees F )

Since mine whines at warmer temps than most other people, I am going to swap the Xfer case fluid and report back. I will give the synthetic a try and see what happens. Thanks!
