thanks for the reply and the hint. Markus has been afraid to weld so close to the knuckle ball, and all axels we have seen so far have been bend at the long tube...I´ll discuss the completion....have you ever had any problems with the high pinion diff. ? By the way the front is about 100kg lighter then an original HDJ 80...

My wife and me designed the car, first we wanted to stretch the frame and make a longer cabine with an upright back.
While making the first set up we noticed, that we might go without touching the frame...
here finding the design, this was no good

the metall work, stretching the J4 body and the fenders, the build up of the cabine, welding the tanks and most of the work getting 40 and 80 together was done by Markus...we did most of the planing and the design (sometimes contrary to Markus´concepts, sometimes fabrication ways forced us to build different to our plans) and we build the interior / furniture

we could use a well equipted carpenders garage in the neighborhood

Hello, I allready introduced myself and our Toyo in the J80 forum because most of the technic is HDJ 80, but I think this forum fits better....so I will move it here and start a new thread:


We have been travelling by LandCruiser for years now, first with a BJ45, than with modified HZJ78 with sleeping roof. But this set up was build for Afrika and not perfect for the North because of the canvas walls of the roof and the hight of the car with the roof and the Michelin XZL 255/100, we were often afraid of tipping over

Therefore here some pictures of our new home, we decided to use mainly 80 technic, but did not like the idea of living in the 80- body. We used as far as possible original Toyota parts. Exception ist the Vintage A/C (I already regret) and a volume sport air filter because there was no space for the original under the bonnet left.

it is a 1993 HDJ 80 with manual gearbox, changed to 12V alternator and starter from the HDJ 100, australian clutch (like the one from the later 24v 80), copper radiator from HZJ75, 4.5:1 Diffs from PZJ75, HT rallye Suspension, 325/80 R16 Cooper SST on Alcoa 8" rims, reinforced front axle, 2x about 200l diesel in alu tanks underfloor and 2x about 60l water in V4A tanks underneath the seats. Bonnet and doors are build of f/g with some kevlar layers, two 90ah AGM batterys are in underfloor stoarage boxes and 2 Solarpannels with 170W wait to be installed, 12V Kompressor wih tank for refilling tires.....
In the back is a small cabine with hydraulic elevatible top, and in the front we adapted the J4 body from a 1979 HJ47. The J4 body ist lengthend about 8cm, so I can sit comfortably. The cabine and most of the technics was build by Marcus www.offroad-schmiede.com
Inside we build our home (two people) for all seasons and conditions...Heating is provided for the engine and drivers cabine by a Webasto, in the back we have a Eberspächer air heater for us and the wardrobe for drying the jackets etc. Origo cooker for inside cooking, Engel fridgebox, 4.5bar waterpump with Katadyn-waterfilter, small sink, outside shower.....

first picture is the same piste along the beach as shown above with the HZJ78. It was lot more comfortable with the wider track and less hight of the truck

I am designing something similar for the back of my HZJ105 once I chop it into a dual cab ute. The layout is different to my design but I am really liking your layout. There are a heap of really good design ideas there.

Marcus Haase from the www.offroad-schmiede.com starts a conversion of that kind in Janaury...I beliefe it will come out most excellent

I can verify that the camera has not been rotaded to make look more scary than it is!

...this slope gets preatty twisted, and tin the spring time this spot has got snow in it to make it more exciting

Those are really nice pictures you have! You have been all over the country
I know where most of them are taken, and that twisting slope is on my favorite area.
I go there 1-3times each summer, mostly on my Enduro bike. And on my LC, both winter and summertime.

the links don´t work..?.

we planed a snow tour next april (just one week, the ferry isn´t so expensive that early the year) but our companion can´t go now...so we probably cancle the trip..

our car is just on 37" with a lot of weight, so glacier tours like you do would´t be possible anyway....love to do it though
what about a thread "driving on-road" in Iceland? And you could tell us about "reading the river" in fords and rivercrossing in the Expedition Forum..???
Would like to see more pics too!

some from the build up time:

placing the J4 body on the 80 frame. It´s sitting further toward the front then original when the 1HD-T is keept in place. Still very little space is left when the visko-clutch fan is used. The Body has to be mounted higher to provide space for the tires underneath the fender.

the frame goes in curves, wich helped to make it not to easy for Marcus to manufacture the cabin-mounts

The vintage A/C radiator fits perfectly in front of the radiator from a HZJ75. Adapted metal fenders and aluminium storage front bumper. You can see the 13cm body lift
