This thread is for shareing information and experince from traveling in Iceland.

Lets start with some basic info.
Iceland is an island in the North Atlandic sea (Europe).
It has a population of about 320,000 and a total area of 103,000 km²
It has a about 20.000km road-system
It has estimated 20-40.000km of dirt-roads and slopes that are not maintained, 50% of them are on maps.

Driveing OFF-Road is forbidden !
But driving on snow off-road is legal, as long you are not damaging the nature.
The nature of the highlands is very sensitive due to a very short summertime.

We have a huge amount of modded Toyotas, and this is probably the only country where you can rent a 38" rental-car

good idea...have to join you ;)

some aspects about kayaking in Iceland

it is no problem in the sea (besides weather, wind, current, surf and steep coast or sharp lava, hungry orcas...)

but in fresh water desinfection of the whole gear becomes necessary. You need a protocol of desinfektion everytime you enter a new lake or river. Reason is the fear of spreading fish diseases from one spot to another

great video, especially the last and long one:cheers:

was that small river crossing the Tunganáa  ? Where did you cross? Near to Jökulheimar?

(copyed it here, so we find it again....)

Yes, the small river was the only part that was not frozen, and we crossed, near Jökulheimar.
The last photo in the first post of this threat, is allso from crossing Tuná, it´s taken between the mountains to the left on your photo.

this pic is from passing Tuná just above Jökulheimar same day, it was totally frosen, the small mountains are a pile of sand, at the beginning of the glaciar.

same glacier in summertime and in the north

Gaesavatnaleid
huge sander fields,.. not the wather depth but quick sand could make some problems. For this reason minimum two cars and long cables are required, if you are not very shure about the actual road status...
In the background moraine and the glacier black from ashes..

Great pics! That is a country I'd like to visit one day.
And just wondering... What effect did have the very bad state of the local financial sector for tourists? In short: is travelling there cheaper than it used to be?

Finacial crises

This is a former ,Fire department 44" LC, it has only 60k km on it.

LC80

It was modyfied for 44" when it was new, in 1992, build for rescue jobs, and to have available if needed .
Typical lift for 80-series, total lift 8", 4" on boddy, and 4" on suspension. 4.88 diffs. Same mods as : http://4x4offroads.net/ModifiedProductionVehicle.pdf
Toyota-land-cruiser-australia.html

Inside was enough space for one laying injured persone.
The fire department sold it in 2007, and it was replaced by a new Ford econoline on 46".

Love this thread! Great pics..Breathtaking!
