Just a quick question to see if I should just chunk the old and broken alternator in the trash or would someone want it to try and repair?

What do you mean by broken? If OEM, it’s worth rebuilding.

At this point in time in US history, I'm not throwing any part away. Just imagine that 30yrs from now, you'll need another alternator and they're NLA, and you'll be kicking yourself for throwing away a perfectly good rebuildable core!

I'm exaggerating a bit, but I'm big on replacing with OEM and rebuilding your original part to stick on the shelf for a rainy day. Doesn't cost much, and doesn't take up much space.

What is wrong with it?

If it's not a molten piece of scrap or smashed to bits, it's worth rebuilding

Agreed. Rebuilt the alternator (original) on my 80 series at 316K miles. The one on my 100 series was just too far gone (burned up).
