I know exactly where you are talking about. So you are going to head up there on Friday and just wait for everyone to catch up to you on Saturday morning? If so, Darcie and I may join you on Friday night if you don't mind. That would too cool.

Jack

Thats the plan if :princess: goes for it, I haven't run this one by the steering commitie yet;) . I don't see any problems with you guys joining us if we head up there early.

We could wait for the herd to pass and join up or head into town for breakfast, whatever anybody wants to do.

Not sure if I will be coming up Friday night or Saturday morning. Installing air bumps on the 4Runner at Samco Fab on Friday. Can't wait to test them out!

Dang Harry, just how fast do you think we are going to be driving?:D :D
Can't wait to check out your 'runner.

Sounds like a plan. We'll get final plan figured out.

Fast I hope! At least in some spots. Speed in the dirt is one place that the 4Runner definitely bests the 80 series. The Light Racing Jounce Shocks should make it even better.

I'm going to sound like a cheap bastid here, but anybody know if there is some hidden nevada gas station on the way up there with low prices? 3.70/g in Truckee on a highschool budget, with a 11-12 mpg car is not a good equation. This High Rock place looks like a good drive too.

Reno Costco is about the cheapest. After that, get ready to bend over. You have to fill up in Gerlach and get ready for it to hurt...

See you there.

Jack

I think regular is around $3.30 in Reno.
Might be time to invest in some gas cans. An extra 10 Gal should be enough to avoid buying gas in Gerlach. It might wind up being a wash by the time you buy the cans but you'll have them for next trip.

There is a nice camp spot around 40° 29'N, 119° 49'W (NAD83/WGS84), just after you cross the bridge at Smoke creek. The camp spot is by the creek under a grove of cottonwood trees. This is about 3/4 of the way between Reno and Gerlach. Maybe closer to Gerlach.

I've camped there before and it's indeed a cool spot. Usually there's a nice stream (or is a brook?) running through it.

Sigh, another trip I wish I could've made it to....:crybaby:

Enjoy!

Well you could always skip another weekend going home, fly to Reno instead, rent a vehicle or catch a ride, borrow some of my extra gear and there you are. What's your excuse now?:grinpimp:

Are you sure they won't miss you at work? :flipoff2:

I'm hoping we will camp at Smoke Creek Friday night.

How far off the main road is that? We're still trying to settle the logistics on travel time and such, none of us can take any extra time off. It looks like you could spend a week up there and not get bored...

It's just off of the main road, like a couple of hundred yards. Not usually a lot of traffic on the road so dust isn't a big deal. The additional drive time from Reno is about 1 to 1.5 hours, maybe more to allow for finding your way through Sparks and topping up the gas tank in Spanish Springs.

There are a couple of possible ways to get to Gerlach. You can stay on I-80 to Wadsworth then cut north on SR447. This is the way most choose to get to Burning Man.

Or you can take off north on SR445 in Sparks/Reno. SR445 turns into a well maintained gravel road just past the turn off to the Needles at Pyramid Lake. Last year we averaged 55+MPH on the gravel section.
IMHO travel time is about the same either way, we prefer the scenery around Smoke Creek Desert so we usually take that route.

I think you could spend the whole summer in Northern Washoe and not get bored. We never do.:grinpimp:

Yeah, damn...

Well, we'll be there, don't know when Friday night. If not, Gerlach Sat AM.

Already planning an expedition for next year...

:)

Due to Life, Work, Family, and building a new home I will not be making this trip this year. The good news is that I'm looking at a promotion at work so I might be able to attend some meetings this summer, due to a different work schedule. So anys have fun, Damn I wish I could make it. I'll be Reno May 30th, 31st, and 1st if you guys are doing anything cruiser related let me know. Josh

Congradulations on the new hous and promotion.
Check th etrip schedule from time to time, and this forum for spur of the moment trips.

So for the people camping Friday night at Smoke Creek, are we still going to get up and head into Gerlach for breakfast? See everyone there.

We were just going to go along with what everyone else wanted to do. There should be plenty of time either way.

Hell, even Mrs. Surfpig is excited about this trip!

(we'll see how she feels after 5 hours in the Piggie :D )

Do you guys set up camp at Soldier Meadows and then wheel the canyon? JUst curious. Doesn't matter to me.

Excellent, well I think we are going to shoot for breakfast at Bruno's Saturday morning.

Glad to hear you are going to make it, looking forward to meeting you and the :princess: , also checking out the oinker:)

So far the rough plan is to wheel through the canyon and set up camp at Steven's Camp, if it is not already occupied. If it is, well I think we will figure that out when/if it happens.

Jack

Jack & Dan: Don't know when/if you are planning to leave on Friday. I am thinking, realistically, I could be leaving the house around 2:00PM at the earliest and 3:00PM at the latest. If this is close to the time you are leaving and want to run together let me know. Otherwise I'll see you up there.
