Hi all,

Happy and proud new 80 owner here. I’ll be driving my 80 cross country from LA to Denver over two days starting Sunday. I’m a relatively skilled home mechanic, however I have not yet worked on 80. I plan to buy some harbor freight basics, adjustable wrenches, screwdrivers, socket set, etc.

I have been through the basics of my 80, oil, trans oil, coolant, etc but it’s still an untested vehicle until I can get some wrench time on it at home.

My question to this crew is are there any suggested must haves for road side repair of an 80? For example, special spanner wrenches, unique sizes (eg axle nut of 54mm)?

Similarly any particular spares I should carry? I plan to carry spare coolant, oil, water, etc. Truck came with a spare PHH, any particular tools needed to do that in the field?

Thx

The tool bag actually has everything you'll need, except a flatbed wrecker. If you need anything that's not in the bag, you need the flatbed.

I wouldn't take my truck out of the driveway if I thought I needed that wheel nut wrench; that thing stays in the toolbox until it's called for.

BTW, DO NOT use a Phillips screwdriver on any of the screws. They are not Phillips, they are JIS automotive.

See that’s exactly what I’m talking about! I would not have otherwise known it’s a JIS head.

Toyota tools are KTC (Kyoto Tool Company). So are these:

You can buy them separately here. Toyota no longer sells them through dealerships, because Snap–On doesn't want to be botherd to carry someone else's tools.

Megadora also sells JIS automotive screwdrivers:

You will also not ever use a 13–mm or a 15–mm socket or wrench; they are not JIS automotive standard.

Ratcheting 10–, 12–, 14– and 17–mm are the most common on the truck, if you're stocking your garage toolbox. The power steering and transmission hose fittings are 14–mm and you'll need a crow's foot for them.

There's a sparkplug wrench in the toolbag.

If you don't have either/both of the above, you really need a AAA card.

beat me by 20 seconds...
I was going to add a comment about NOT needing the 54mm socket....saved me time not adding it..lol
I do not have a factory tool bag, so what’s in it?

I was just using the 54mm as an example, I clearly will not be doing a knuckle rebuild off I15.

from memory, metric spanners, pliers, and the wheel lug nut wrench and the jack handle. Probably more than that.
I mean, you got to have the tools to change a flat tire at a minimum.

Many JIS screw heads will have a dot. Japan has since moved away from JIS to ISO 8764, but that was long after our vehicles were built.

Seriously, if you don't have a toolbag, post a request on the wanted pages, and ask you locak clubhouse if anyone has one they want to sell.

...or ask these guys, they're in your neck of the woods.

Thank you for the suggestions all.

I think I can put that stuff together pretty result. I do already have stuff to change a tire for sure and yes as a middle aged adult I’ve had AAA for about 25 years.

LOL. LA to Denver is not "cross country". It's a whole 1100 miles. That's a short trip.
Check all fluids and the air in the tires before you leave. Bring a credit card and some snacks.

Yes, as long as Bubba the local mechanic never touches it.

Log your miles per smile or pucker factor due to vibrations. Fuel mileage is overrated!
