so we are starting the 3RZ conversion on my brothers 85.
we picked up a motor a couple years back but havent had the best luck getting the correct body harness and the t100 oil pan stuff.

so i craigslisted a 96 t100 2wd for 600 about a month ago. that saves us finding the body harness and oil pan conversion stuff. also the EVAP stuff is just a one solenoid canister with one hose.

a couple starter pics

the donor and the motor. and todds blue rig.

..but will it go up hill?

:p

Nice start

so pretty much from out initial looks.
we already scored an aftermarket intake tube with sensor off craigs.
we figured out today that the hi pressure line from the 22RE PS pump bolts right to the fitting on the 3RZ pump, no need for custom stuff, yet.

we are just going to cut the motor mounts off the t100 frame and refit them to the mini.
for the fuel lines, we are going to reposition the fuel filter from under the intake plemun to somewhere else closer to the passenger side. this is yet to be determined in the fitting process.

the clutch line from the t100 will just be rebent to fit, as the slave cylinder is now on the DS of the bell.

we are going to just use the stock 85 radiator for now if need be we will go to a 3 core.

retaining stock battery position. will just run some new cable for the starter.

the alternator wiring is going to be most likely a matter of swapping the plug onto the 85 harness, the
other option we talked about was just swapping pulleys. this will be finalized in fitting as well.

exhaust is still kind of undecided, but tentatively planning on something similar to mine. just going to buy a couple bends from speedway and cut and fit.

more as we progress.

this swap is going to nearly double the HP. the RE is rated very generously at like 110hp it feels more like 75-80 though. the RZ is rated at 150hp or so.

to anyone who has driven a 3RZ, its head and shoulders over an RE. but still not the 5VZ :flipoff2:

and the HP probably isnt going to help driving ability either :flipoff2:

I could use his old 22re if its still good. I started looking at the one jerod brought me and I think it'd be best to swap in a complete one.

day late and a dollar short.

we had been waiting to sell one of the two motors we have to start. the RE went away saturday.

we have another 3RZ for sale though, only needs some conversion parts.

And by the time your read to throw it in Jesse, Aric wil be an old pro to help you..... Y A KNOW

so theres always something to be said for extra parts lying around.

in order to maintain a clean swap we needed to match the body plugs left in the 85. luckily i happened to have an old 87 4runner engine harness that had been condemned, i was able to use the old body harness plugs from it to match the pickup.

i spent a couple hours last night downloading TIS and compiling info into usable tables to tackle the wiring project.

so the first thing i did today was make sure the wires in my donor engine harness were matching with the pickup, verifying this i found a typo in my EWD.

the first pic is of the 85 cab/body plugs
the second is the ECM plug that needs cut off
the third is showing the 85 marked and ready for the next step.

so after the 85 was prepped, i did essentially the same thing to the t100. marked and verified the wires in the cab plugs. in the t100 harness its a stand alone thing, all three ECM plugs are in the engine harness. the body plugs do what the should, connect the body, to the drivetrain.

first pic shows the t100 prepped and marked.
the second pic is of the two body plugs.
the third is pic of the 4 plugs needed from the t100 the OBD2, 2 body plugs, the little blue is to the EVAP solenoid. ( i had to pull it through the DS firewall and across the dash.)

after all the taping and such, the real fun begins. this part is not for the faint of heart.

here are a couple of pics of the almost finished wiring.

first pic shows the opposing ends of one part of the pigtail
second shows the opposing ends of the other part of pigtail
thirds shows the pigtail plugged into the 85 and ready to be plugged into the T100 engine harness.

so i have all the tables for the wire colors in my notebook and will post up after i make sure it all works right.

at this point the only part left undone is the tach wiring. for two reasons, one is that the wire comes from the other side on the 85 and i wasnt able to incorporate it into the pigtail. so i have to go back and run a wire across the dash for tach signal. pretty sure i am just going to use the wire from the t100 and resplice it back to itself and swap the pin at the combo meter. the second is because i have to verify if there is a required tach mod. (adding a resistor)

also there was no provision for a 4wd light at this point either.
i spliced into the old wire to get "key on" power for the EVAP solenoid as well as the OBD2 plug.
i also had to splice into the circuit open relay wiring, because it is controlled by the ECM now, not the AFM.

spent a couple hours working slowly on pulling the RZ. left the trans wiring and 3 bellbolts for my bro.

had to leave something for todd to do . my dad was going wild with the air rachet while i was working on the motor.

My dome light flickers...........:meh:

Change the bulb, could be a loose filament.

Aric, you are a machine! :D

I was being humorous......and Aric's a machine?? Those pics look more like brain surgery to me...or bomb defusing.:D

not a helluva lot of progress today. todd had work and i worked in my yard all day. went over about 730 to cut the motor mounts off. have i mentioned how much i want a plasma.

i saved probably way more of the t100 mount than i needed too. it made them kind of a bitch to get off, especially the DS with the rack and pinion in the way.

the mounts came off the 85 a bit easier.

my pics from tonite. just showing some lame grindage. and the motor mount comparison. clearly the larger mount is from the t100s wider frame rails. my dad said the frame rails are 7" further apart than the 85.
