ELWOOD LIVES~ I was able to get elwood back together today. I am lacking smal pieces for the carb linkage and vacumn line diagram. I looked in the Hayne workbook but the vacumn diagram only goes to 1977. Does anyone have a decent diagram (non-calif, non-high alt) or picture of vacumn lines for a 1978 FJ55?

I also need a good quality picture of the linkage going to the rear of the carb. I believe I am missing a spring, three bushings and a cotter pin. Pictures would really help. The spring I beleive attaches to the adapter that comes off the bottom left of the carb. Is there a bushing that fits the front of the long rod that comes from the accelerator cable braket to the carb. Like I said any decent pics would really help.

I'm about one hours worth of work from driving down the road. Thanks for all the help so far...

What kind of header do you have? I have a Man-a-Fre 6-1 header that has been a PITA during my entire engine swap/build and it still freakin' leaks. I was advised not to shave/grind the header either so I have used different washers to build up the difference between the header and intake manifold. I cut some washers in half to not interfere with the intake manifold. I tried this a few times and thought I finally had it tight, until I started the engine. I used an OEM manifold and may use the aftermarket gasket that came with the header and the OEM gasket next time along with some RTV sealant. This may help. Let us know what you try.

How did you guess I have the Man-A-Fre 6 - 1. I took a flat plane (level) to check the difference between each set of pipes. There is almost 1/8th inch cumulative between the first and third set. Descision time: Plan # 1, I'm going to take a plasma cutter, separate the bar and cut some washer and take a flat file to level out as much as I can. Plan B: is to weld a bead and have it machined. I will post results as I go.

As of today, I have the flywheel in place, the clutch disc, pressure plate and bellhousing installed. I went to put the fork back on and the retaining hanger is broken. Called Toyota and was able to order a replacement fork and clips. They will be in on Wednesday. That means one more week sitting in the garage.

Meanwhile, I'm installing rockers and coating with POR-15.

the 6 in to 1 is junk! We pull em and chuck em. Go with the Downy header and be happy :)

Calico Kid, thanks for the info. I will start working the header issue. I drove the 55 around the block for the first time in six months and got cheered.

I pulled the carb back off and with new linkage parts I was able to keep it from binding. So thecarb is good once again.

The last of the requirements is a need to set the timing. and I desperately need photos of the vacumn lines. I can't find any diagrams that actually match my 2F. Is there anyone in the Colo Springs area that has a 78 2F that I can come look at or that can drive to the Monument area? So close to getting done. Thanks for any help.

I have the 55 back together, except for the fenders. I refilled the transmission and the t/c. Transmisssion did fine. The transfer case seemed to leak out as quickly as it went in. So it looks like a rebuild on the t/c is the next step.

How straight forward is this? Any recomendations?

Thanks

Do you have the parking brake drum on?

I have the MAF 6-1 and it has never leaked for me. To head off leaks before they started I replaced all header exhaust bolts with stud/nut and hefty washers. Then I used the beefy foiled gasket that MAF supplies instead of the cheesy felpro. Next I put a thin film of RTV red on and torqued it down. Works like a charm.

Don't knock it till you've tried it.

rear t/c seal

This weekend I dove into the rear seal of the t/c... Removed the brake drum, then the seal was easily replaced. Found some more work that I need to do. Looks like there is little pad left on the parking brake shoes and had bolts missing (bad thing) and one broke spring...

Anyone ever feel like you take one thing apart and find two more things that need fixing?

Also got the second rocker panel tacked yesterday....

Make SURE that the parking brake drum is not scored or it WILL leak. I gave up and got the Mudrak dual seal housing to ENSURE that the drum seals.

Yes. It's the life and times of a 30 year old vehicle.

Once you get on top of the maintenance it's not that bad. The '60 is 25 years and it really doesn't take much maintenance since I stay on top of it. I expect that the '55 will be that way too once all the little things are sorted out.

Can also get a speedi sleeve.

As long as you don't wheel it.:beer::beer:

Hey, any drive out here in Guatemala is like wheeling it! The roads are like a continuous repaired pothole. I've beaten a shackle to bits already here as well as busted a shock mount but that's what the 'Cruiser is designed for!!

C-G.........so right <LOL>normal roads there are wheeling it here...... I can remember hitting potholes on the Panamerican highway and having to beat wheels to a semblance of roundness so they would hold air............a foot pedal airpump in those not so faraway days was a lifesaver!......still have the damn thing stashed away somewhere:D

fenders

Today, I worked on getting the upper and lower fender on the passenger. I need to get the cruiser back on the road. I ground off the old spot welded factory nuts. Then, I welded bolts to the same locations. The upper fender sled right on and then I used wing nuts for easy removal. I will go back at a later time to finish the body work. Slowly getting there. I still have to work the linkage on the transfer case.

Pulley Question

I replaced the original crankshaft pulley with what I thought was the perfect replacement. After putting the belts back on, one of the V-belts rides high in the pulley.

Did toyota make two different two belt pulleys? My 55 is a 78. Has anyone else ran into this issue? What is the production date change? Any thoughts?

Front T/C Shaft

Today, I tore into the transfer case. The front shaft was seized. I took the inspection plate off the top for a quick look, then ended up taking the four bolts off the front and remove the front shaft, heated with a torch, and cleaned up. I need to order gaskets and a new boot for the shaft. Another day in cruiserville.

Sure, there were a couple different 2 groove crank pulleys...there was the wide/narrow that came on my '74 and a double wide that came on later 2Fs....

The continuation

Pighead, thanks for the info. I must have received the wide/narrow when I ordered my latest. If anyone in the colorado springs area has a wide/wide pulley, I am looking for one. On a second note, part have been recieved for putting the transfer case back together. I should have Elwood back on the road this weekend w/ four wheel drive operational.:D

P.S. I am always looking for a late model hood too~
