To H55 or not, that is the question

do it....best mod ever. I have kept mine mostly stock and I love having the 5th gear on the freeway. Engine no longer sounds like it is about to take off like a rocketship out of my hood when I am heading to the lease.

I put the H55 to the 3FE in my 80, (Well, Josh from Willamette Garage in Portland did) and removing the torque converter from the 3FE has been a complete change in driving dynamics. Suddenly there is pull where there wasn't. Suddenly every mph number has double digits (12-16 depending on the drive) I think it's a great choice, and I prefer the control. Go for it, you'll be surprised how the drive changes.

We like to ship them assembled too!

Of course we are happy to ship just the H55F transmission and keep a half dozen in stock for same day shipping.
Hello @cruiseroutfit , Great to know. Been super happy with your products and services in the past. Regarding a transmission from you goes, my only blocking point is the shipping since I live on the east coast. As fate would have it, I'll be in SLC and Park City next week. I'm wondering if I can pick up the transmission from you and check it on the plane on my return trip as it would probably be quite a bit cheaper than shipping it. Do you know how much these weigh? In the meantime, I'll check with the airline to see if this is even a possibility.

Cheers, James

We stock them :D

Guessing 100lbs? I've checked a ton of auto parts around the world but you're my hero if you pull it off.

Good to know Kurt, I'll call Delta today and see what I can work out. If this is a go, then I'll just need to figure out how to lug it to my car on NY, haha.

guessing the pallet will fit awkwardly on a luggage cart....

FFA require that all pilots be privy to the cargo on their flights. No surprises these days. I wonder what the airline pilot is gonna think when he sees “Toyota LandCruiser Transmission” on his list.

Captain may say, "Let's move that Cruiserhead to 1st class!"

Im sure they see weirder things....

What would be crazy is to see a Toyota Land Cruiser Transmission on a pallet being air dropped from a @cruiseroutfit private cargo plane while flying Delta.

I've never flown in a transmission but we did fly in is in front knuckle parts and top ramen on a private charter once :D

I have a 2FE and ran it with both the H42 and H55F. Daily driving around town I love the H42. It has more pep in its step getting off the line of those never ending red lights. The H55F is slow to start and annoying in city driving conditions. I used to hate my H55F because of how slow it was off the line compared to the H42.
However, Now i commute on the highway and the H55F is perfect with its overdrive gear.

I would only not reccomend the H55F to somebody who daily drives in the city and doesnt go on highways, The H42 is king for that.
That is odd I think the 4speed and 5speed gear ratios are all the same 1st thru 4th. Did you go taller tires at the time as installing the 5speed?

This was helpful for me. The FJ60 North America has a 3.70 ring gear not 4.11.

This chart is wrong. H42 and h55f do not mirror gear ratios in gears 1-3. See link TLC FAQ - 8.1 Transmission & transfer Case Ratios (All :1) - https://www.cruiserfaq.com/08-01.php
This chart is listing H41 B,F,2H Gear ratios as an H42.
The H41 for certian cruisers will mirror h55f gears 1-4,

The h42 FJ60's first gear is 3.555:1

Edit: it may not be "wrong" but your link is listed on an Australian website. Who knows what they have over there. For US spec the h42 and h55f are 90% different with the transmission casing being the only compatible part that im aware of.

The nice part is on medium off road conditions. I'm having to use low range where I could be using 1st with the H55. It's a PITA to have to constantly shift from high to low range and vise versa.
The good news is that H55 is fine with 3.70's. you can swap to 4.10's later on.
