Hey all,
Anyone know the thread pitch and size for the grease zerk fittings on the tire carrier hinges?
I am missing them on my 65 FJ40.
Thanks!

Did the ‘65 have them? Don’t see anything in the parts book, but… 🤷‍♂️.

Mine is an early 64 build, but I’m not sure if these are stock or added later? They are threaded and the pins show signs of someone using zerk fittings too long as they have old gouge marks on them.

My guess is those were added but not 100%.

Yeah I can’t really tell. I have seen other 40s with zerks there, but it could have been a popular mod back in the day. I think they are either a 1/8” BSPT or 10x1mm zerk size. Narrowing it down. :)

Those are defiantly PO add ons.
Thanks for weighing in. Good to know. Since they are likely PO add ons then no way they would be metric threads. :)

Going to fill them or replace?

I’m going to rock them. Might as well I guess. New zerk fittings are on the way. I’m also going to add some thin oil-embedded bronze thrust bearings between the pivot points to help and reduce the steel on steel interface.

def added. i've done that to many of my cruisers
Nice! Yeah I think they are useful. I put an Allen plug in the top one since the tire carrier hit the zerk. Bottom clears fine.

Brings me to another question. The 65 parts catalog shows castle nuts and cotter pins holding on the carrier pivot studs…. But mine have no provision for cotter pins. Seems super odd there wouldn’t be a hole for them.
Anyone run across this before?

Similar vintage - mid-66. No grease zerk on mine. Definitely has the castle nut and pin though. Are you sure there's not a sheared off cotter pin hiding the hole?

You were right… basically. The cotter pin holes were plugged with hardened crud and took on the shape of the threads! I was able to dig them both out. Phew. :) I need to find the appropriate thick washers but running double stack for now. I also ended up using an Allen head plug to block the grease port when not in use. Clearance is too tight there for a zerk to stay.
