Hello all. Just got a 100 series about 2 weeks ago. I was told the timing belt was done at roughly 100k. She has 145k now. Just wondering for anyone who has done this, what markings or brand were on the original factory belt? I pulled the passenger belt cover and my belt says Mitsuboshi and has made in USA on it. Is this most likely an aftermarket belt or could it have come from the factory with this one?
So yours was original and said Mitsuboshi? Did it say " made in USA" also?
No, it wasn't the original but the new one I installed is Mitsubishi.
It looks like yours has been replaced.
Check the inside of the belt for cracks.

No offence guys, but i only buy Toyota for the rubber band that holds the motor together.
I'm not debating brands or what to buy. Just trying to find out what the ORIGINAL factory belts say. Do they say Toyota on them with a bunch of Japanese writing or do these Mitsuboshi belts made in America come on them from the factory?
I did my original at about 110K. Don't remember what it said on it. Took it out, it looked brand new. Started to put the aftermaarket replacement in it, don't remember the brand, and couldn't do it. Went to Toyota and bought the OEM belt. Don't remember how it was marked.
Need to do it again. Can't use aftermarket though because the beancounter in my brain starts adding up the cost of a motor, and that's what the risk is, the ENTIRE motor. It just ain't worth it to me to save a sawbuck or so, and I never buy OEM pretty much.
I'm sure the aftermarket are just fine, I just ain't got the balls to use them.
I don't remember the markings on the Stealer bought belt though, sorry I can't help you there.
Ok. I got temporary peace of mind when I saw the made in USA markings but I guess it's still possible that could be the original even though the vehicle was built in Japan. Every other part I can see says Made in Japan on it. I guess I just don't have enough evidence to know if it was done or not.
Mine lived all it's time in the South in high heat and humidity and looked brand new.
So...as I'm planning my reassembly, it has occurred to me that I can't swear that I haven't ratcheted on either of the cam or crank pully enough to turn it around. As I reinstall things, as long as my marks are all matched up - I'm good right? In other words, is it possible to be one full turn out of timing? Or if all your marks are by the book you're in good shape? Thanks in advance.

The individual rotating parts are either on their marks or not. One full turn will always bring them back to proper orientation. Once the timing belt is connecting them, the cams turn once per two turns of the crank, I think that is what you are uneasy about.
**EDIT** Disregard please, after staring at things for about an hour, I'm no longer uneasy. Thanks for the awesome thread.

Also, I had the same break in the water inlet housing that @dfrelich did. I wonder if we were both prying at the wrong angle. Sucked, but easier than I thought it would be to remove the broken ring.
Actually, could I get a quick ruling? If the belt is on these three marks, I'm good right?
Just checking bc even though things seem to spin correctly when I turn the crank manually, I'm not sure I'd recognize it if there was an issue.

Has anyone used the Gates kit that includes the water pump, pulleys, gaskets etc?: The whole kit is about $160

I was wondering the same thing ...I picked up a lx with 126k. With no documentation of timing belt..now at 132 k I had to get the peace of mind so I shelled out 200 for a aisin kit that came with a mitsubishi belt..and another 360 for Toyota dealer to replace....needless to say the timing belt in there was a Toyota belt that looked brand new the water pump had no signs of leakage and also looked new,the dealer told me it's hard to inspect the belt and u might as well replace it by the time u inspect it...if I woulda pulled cover off and saw the belt looked as new as it did I woulda not payed to get it done ...this is second time I replaced a belt on a Toyota product and the belt was in great shape...yet just goes to show u I have a 06 gs430 with only 40k on a tbelt and w.pump change,and water pump had sprung a small leak .ive learned with tbelt change the majority of time it's peace of mind over faulty euipment
