Anyone been down there in the past few years to get their upholstery done?

Where'd you go, how was the experience, what got covered and how much did you pay?

Unrelated: is Shane back in the game yet or is that option long gone?

I have not. However, back in the day it was always best to remove what you want upholstered and take ONLY those parts to the shop. Leaving your beloved Land Cruiser down there for a week opens the door for a lot of things to go wrong.

After living in San Diego for several years you can usually get quality work in TJ for a good price. Helps to speak the language or know someone down there you can trust. I definitely agree with just taking the seat down and not the whole rig....SUVs are a hot commodity in Mexico and Central America for that matter.

TJ has had some issues the last 10-15 years, and they still exist, but not nearly as bad. The government (on both sides of the border) have tried to make it a bit more tourist friendly again. Most people down there would do a heck of a lot more for you than anyone here, believe me.

Border has a million lanes now so crossing isn't nearly as painful either.

I travel to TJ daily and am working with a family friends body shop, will get the contact info for the upholstery people he uses for his restorations.
That's great, thanks for the pending referral! Have you by chance heard of a spot called Champion's? Saw it recommended on a hotrod forum during my google search.

I used to go all the time in the 90's when I lived in LA. Great source for fireworks, butterfly knives, a fake Rolex or three, and 30¢ tacos. Plus I'm down a serape or two...so, I'm excited to get down there again—for upholstery or otherwise.

I'll be dragging my two older brothers who are fluent Spanish speakers. One spent a couple years in Chile the other in MX.
I think I'll be in pretty good hands language wise.

It is an amazing difference. Now you can cross in 10 minutes. Before it used to take 2 hours or more while you wait with all the stinky exhaust fumes and the freak show with all the vendors, performers and beggars with missing body parts. All those poor people have to act fast now to make money.

I live in San Diego, and took my cruiser for a quote for both front seats, I was quoted $220 for both front seats. I took a look at seats they were working on at the shop and looked good. I want to search for another spot and compare prices. And yes I can speak fluent Spanish

The border's still a crap shoot every day, but it's much better than it has been. If you have a passport card bring that.

I cross daily and would be happy to help you guys with this project if you're interested. I cannot cross the seats for you on the way back (i'm a sentri pass holder) but I can show you the way and speak fluent spanish. Simple rules to make crossing easier, make sure you have your VALID AND CURRENT license/registration/insurance & passport. If you have State Farm or All State they have programs that cover you 50 miles into mexico for free, give your agent a call.

Dirty, what shop did you get quoted at? Champs?

I just google mapped it. 1880 miles to Tijuana. I'll just grow my own...
It's never been very good anyway.

:meh:

My dad and I used to haul cars down ther for body and paint...

Hey guys, stopped at Champs today to drop off my passenger seat. I am going to goto Keystone (aero dr) for my selection on fabrics and then bring them over for the retrofit. I did ask that they fix the foam at the same time as well.

The shop was right down the street from Total Fitness in the center of TJ, crossing the border it's going to take you MAYBE 5 minutes to get there.

They are pretty busy and turn around time is around saturday if I bring everything in tomorrow and thursday. total cost for the job $4000 pesos, about $260. I expect the price to drop if I bring my own materials.

Mike
