I have a aug 71 fj55 that I am doing transmission work. what I think is the original engine and a 3 speed are in it. I changed the clutch and drove it for a while. Im having to change out the throwout bearing and when I have ordered parts for cruiser vendors and i keep getting a small bearing (1F) which is what everyone is sending me per year i have. In looking at pics, I seem to have a bearing for a latter 4 speed transmission (75 4 speed) . And the clutch for the 71 did fit on the truck.

Recap:

1971 fj55
3 speed transmission
original engine?
exedy clutch from a 71
big throwing bearing from a 4 speed

is this possible?

I am using a generic picture that I dont own.... but these are the exact bearings i am dealing with...

Are the ID's on both bearings the same? If you're sure you have a 3 speed transmission (should be obvious) than I'd run the correct (smaller size) bearing assuming you have the correct throwout bearing retainer (the cast piece which the bearing is pressed onto). I'd also compare the contact area on the pressure plate to make sure you don't have mixed up components. I can get you some measurements on stock 1F stuff a bit later.

Both the throw-out bearing hubs AND shift forks are different between 3 speed and 4 speed, soooooo do you have a matching hub and fork, if so you need the bearing that fits that hub. If your's is the 3 finger pressure plate, then you need the smaller bearing, so then hope you have the 3 speed hub and fork?????

these are the pictures I have right now... i can get a picture of the hub in a bit. Again I used the truck for 6 months shifting it well except for a whine.

That looks like a 3-speed clutch fork (stamped out of sheet metal) that's compatible with a 3-finger pressure plate set-up. The throwout bearing should be the small one on the smaller hub.

which would be correct unless they swapped the flywheel and are using a diaphragm style clutch.

how about a pic of the other parts?
are you just changing a throw out bearing? for the cost, just do a full kit.

It seems like a stronger probability that your hub was modified to accept an aftermarket bearing. I think the bearing in your pic is a Chevrolet application.

We once modified Toyota 3 speed hubs for Chevy T.O. bearings, but that was for Chevota V8 conversions. Subsequently we machined Toyota bearing retainers for complete Chevy T.O. bearings- - -these were included with our Chevota adapters.

Sorry to jump in, but I have a similar issue. I have a 72 fj55 with a f engine and 4 speed transmission. I ordered a clutch kit based on the year and received the 3 speed bearing and pressure plate. I realized I needed the larger 4 speed bearing, but I kept the 3 speed pressure plate. Is it necessary to have the 4 speed pressure plate or can I keep it with 3 speed pressure plate and 4 speed fork? Thanks.

I'm really sure you can't mix and match. My '71 FJ40 has the 4-speed and transfer case out of a '78 FJ55, but I used the 3-speed flywheel, clutch disc, 3-finger pressure plate, throwout bearing, and shift fork.

I'm not sure what flywheel it has, but everything bolted up. The problem is when I go to accelerate, the engine revs, but it doesn't feel like the clutch is fully engaged. I can let off and it picks up again. No burning clutch smell.

I also tried pulling up to a curb in 3rd gear and slowly letting out the clutch to see if it's slipping. It stalls every time. I don't want to take it apart again but I'm not sure where to go next. Thanks for the advice.

Did you have your flywheel surfaced while everything was apart?
