Three Dudes, One Truck - Rubicon or Bust

I take a look over the truck to see how she's holding up. Mechanically, I just have to tighten a few of the fixed-end spring hangar bolts and add a little oil.

We noticed that the tailgate wasn't opening properly. We smacked the passenger rear quarter pretty good coming up Cadillac, and it has pushed in a little bit, contacting the tailgate when it drops down.

Nothing a little sweet talking with the BFH can't fix:hillbilly:

The tailpipe tip has also been pushed up and it is touching the body, causing it to rattle a little. The BFH has a little conversation with it, too.

Overall, I'm impressed with the little truck and how it's held up so far

Day Ten - Mon 6/24

We weren't 100% certain we would be able to check out Yosemite from the beginning of our trip, it was just on the list of "hope to see" things while we're in the area. Other than what we've seen from Ansel Adams pictures, we didn't know anything about what was there. But I'd always wanted to go. My dad had never been but always wanted to go as well. Andrew didn't really have a choice in the matter;)

We didn't have time for much more than a drive-by, and several people said not to go if we were just going to drive through. But after talking to Brian & Broc, it became a "must see."

Brian gave me the skinny on where to go. They go backpacking there often, so he knew the ins & outs. He said I need to get to Yosemite Valley - that's where we'd get the most bang for our buck. Since I wanted to take 395 for the scenery, he said to take Tioga Pass (120) to cross the mountains. He assured me it'd be worth the climb.

So here we are, approaching the turn for Tioga Pass, and the mountains start getting bigger, and bigger...

According to Wikipedia, 6% is the maximum grade for an interstate. Tioga pass is 8%. 8%. That doesn't sound like a big jump, but that's 25% steeper the max allowable interstate grade. And it's an 8 mile climb. Over 3000' of elevation in 8 miles.

Have you every read the book, The Little Engine That Could? 'Cause that's what it felt like. We had a full load that needed to get over the mountain.

So, the little Race 2F that could built up a full head of steam, took a running start, and attacked the mountain.

Until... downshift.

And another downshift.

We finally settle on 3rd. So far, 4th has been able to pull us up any highway grade we've encountered. Not now. We shovel coal on the fire as fast as we can. We need every bit of power we can get.

Up we climb, next to giant snow filled valleys, until... FINALLY... TIOGA PASS! The highest pass in California and the Sierras!

9945' :bounce::bounce2:

WITH A 2F!!!

We've got a 75 mile ride (about 2 hours) ahead of us, so there's not much to do except enjoy the view and occasionally stop for pictures.

It's overcast and raining, but we don't really care... WE'RE IN YOSEMITE!!! If anything, it makes it that much more interesting.

Great trip, great write-up. Glad you enjoyed my former "backyard."

Also gave me the opportunity to correct the misspelling of your last name in the upcoming Toyota Trails article. Make that, articles. :D

Also can't believe it took Grogan all the way to page six to post the blond bombshell photo. ;p

Nicely done.
