My 12ht is getting great fuel consumption not sure on the figures but my old 1hdt in a heavy 80 wagon was costing around $240 return for the big smoke and my hj75 cost $140 from the same return trip. The fairly overdrive 22 speed h55 helps as the engine is at 1900 rpm at 70 mph with the 211 diffs. I had any choice of toyota engine from the 1vd down.

nice looking 12HT :) different from mine...

ive heard of the fairly overdrive before, how does it work? is it a big mod to do or?

The Landcruiser fairly has a new rear section that bolts the the front half of the transfer case so it's not a hard install but the transfer is around 5 inches longer. The cross member on my truck had to be cut off and re positioned to accommodate the longer case so we installed some flange plates so it's easy to remove next time around plus keep the engineers happy. I'm very happy with the install and won't go back to the standard transfer but these boxes are very hard to find in Australia and nothing like the early landrover type that bolted to the PTO output. I was lucky and picked up two complete units so I have spares if ever needed.
By the way nice 12ht engine. :)

i mean, a cummins 4bt is your next best bet really as the adapters and such are already available. have fun doing that on a budget lol! if you want to see increased fuel economy with your h42...well you'd be impressed with a h55f for your long trips. coupled with a 3b diesel that works proper and the low weight, you'll love it! i just saw another bj60 pop up on the other side of the border just today. 12ht too! driving condition to boot! CHEAP!

Can you post the link

if they are rare in Oz I will never find one here in Zim then :D

thanks. yes I know, I need a new washer and overflow. just cant find any decent second hand ones around and im too broke to get a new one right now

If you are searching for overdrives it is "Fairey Overdrive".

Ok so the 12ht seems like the best engine too bad it's 4k and the parts are scarce, I don't want to be waiting around for a while for a replacement part and paying alot $$$ for it. How's the 3b with parts, are they though to come by? Also would it work with my stock 40 transmission and Bell housings?
Comparing the 2f to a 3b or 12ht what's the power difference?

If you are on a budget and try to do this to save money I would quit while you are ahead and drop another whore out 2F in it that will take care of you for a few more years and then you can repeat this !

3B with either an H55 or a H41/42 is your most budget friendly option,as far as parts go the only thinghs you ever need are filters and glowplugs,it is very hard to kill a 3B.......believe me I tried several times.

12HT is an awesome engine but they become harder to find and in most cases when the seller says it only has a 100k miles just triple that number unfortunately:(

1HZ H55 is the winning combo in most conversions as it has sufficient power, good parts availability, longevity and they are not that hard to come by.

Price ranges for engine plus tranny I will trow this out

3B H55 about 3500$
12HT H55 about 7000$
1HZ H55 about 6500$

I stay away from the automatics since they rob a good part of the performance and most are almost in need of a costly rebuild after being on the road for 25+ years.

Just my 2 cents and I had all of these engines in a 40 at some point in time.

Rosco cheers mate on my spelling. ;)

Cleanfj40 sorry for the high jack but it relates you may go with this box one day.

Vossie here are some pics of the Fairey transfer and stock 5 speed/transfer :)

I paid $2000 for a low K reconditioned 5 speed with the overdrive transfer and $100 for the second transfer plus shipping around $2600 all up. The box came with a noisy bearing so I was pissed at first until I drove the truck and relished how good the overdrive was and decided I got the better deal. :)

looks like the Japanese safety boots are serving you well.
Been wearing flying boots all my life apart from Cosby slippers in winter now I'm getting old and senile . :)

i think we've gone slightly off topic from what the PO originally was after, but maybe this thread can be used as a sort of "why diesels are great and which one should i get" type thread?

we've already posted up some great reasons for the 3B, 2H, 12HT and 1HZ

2h? I think I messed the convo about it.
I think the 3b is winning right now since parts are said to be easily available. If I find one would it fit my stock transmission bellhousing or do I need an adapter and motor mounts? I am finding some old bj60 with 3b's and h55 for around 5-10k. Only thing is that they are in other states. Im in southern California.

if you can get a 3B plus h55 gearbox too then thats a good combo. but yes you would need to mess with both engine and gearbox mounts. maybe propshaft length too, although someone with more experience would need to chime in

My 40 doesn't have an engine just the tranny and tcase, so if I do get my hands on a 3b I would like to use it with the stock transmission until I find or save up for an h55

The 3B needs a transmission with a fine spline shaft while your gasser uses a course spline shaft, swapping that shaft and rebuilding the trannie cost more then just buying the correct diesel tranny with the engine.

Fyi I usually have 3B/H55 combos available in the us for around 2.5 to 3 k depending on condition and options.
