So a little update.

I've been working slowly this week because I took my hubs and rotors to my Dad in Leduc cause he has a buddy with a press so I got my Dad to press in the studs so I had peace of mind that they were in all the way. I was also debating how I was going to handle the anti-rattle spring and tried to find one in the parts yards, but the ones I got just weren't the same so I just ordered one from Toyota. It'll be here Tuesday, so I'll just run without it 'til then.

Jason offered to lend me his hub socket, but also suggested that I could find one in town. I thought I would have to order one and did not want to wait. I looked at C Tire and P Auto and Parts Source and could not find one, but while I was looking I thought "why not just make one?" So that's what I did. Quite easy actually. The sides are exactly 1 1/4" so I bought a 3' piece of flat bar from Home Depot for $6 and had at 'er.

2" is deep enough for the socket, so theoretically you could make 3 sockets from 36" of bar. I have an assortment of old sockets lying around that I have collected along the way but don't use so I decided to cut off the end of one of the spark plug sockets because you can use either a 3/8 or wrench on the end of it.

Here's the result.

I also made myself another metal ring that I was missing for the knuckle seal.

I'm now at the point where I am going to bleed the brakes and fill with oils and grease where necessary, but I have a concern that I would like an opinion on. The guy has newer 4Runner wheels on the truck and he has 1 1/2" spacers on the front. I put them on, but I am concerned that the studs are not long enough because the bolt is not fully on. I have never used spacers so I don't know if this is normal. The studs look to be used, so I assume they are the ones he used before with these spacers.

It's Alive!

Well, I got the wheels on and took her for a little drive. The main things all seem OK. No major issues.

I changed the front diff oil and didn't even expect any fluid to come out, but thought I should take off the drain plug just to be compulsive/obsessive. The oil that did come out was like sludge really thick and black. Probably mixed with grease from the knuckles, but shouldn't draining the diff be the first step in the process of replacing the oil seals? So I'm going to change the rear diff fluid as well. That was always part of the plan, but I wanted to drive it more today than I wanted to change the diff oil today!

Spare tire is TOAST!. It looks really good and probably the original, but it has a crack in the sidewall that is leaking baaaad. I have a tire I can put on there. The PO also said he has the original rims he is going to give me as well. Can't remember if he said they had rubber on them or not, but if they do, one of them can easily become the spare.

Battery/batteries were almost dead when I tried to start it again today. So over a week, the charge is gone. Not sure if the one original battery is also bad like the other one or if there is a parasitic drain somewhere. It does have the digital clock and I know that IS a drain, but not over a week. I'll probably get new ones eventually, but I had a thought. The batteries in there are quite large and that size is what was required in 1985. Batteries have come a long way. In my Tercel the original battery is quite large compared to the size of the car, but in there now is this teeny tiny battery that is quite powerful. So what I was wondering is if I can put two smaller batteries in the space where there is one now by turning them 90 degrees and then use the other space where there used to be a battery for a deep cycle RV type battery for camping.

The wipers seem awfully slow as well. When I first turned them on, I wasn't sure they were going to work at all but then they seemed to speed up so I am not sure if that is normal, but fast is not very fast at all.

I'm happy with the power so far. I did not feel comfortable taking on the highway yet as I still want to get a feel for it, but I really like it so far. power steering is awesome!

Now to fix some rust!

nice work on the 54mm socket!

I should have been more careful when I welded on the socket part as it's a little off 90 degrees to the rest of the socket, but it works and it's not something that is used everyday.

I think the studs are way to short

If the tie rod ends haven't been done yet, I'd replace them at that mileage. Mine went around 240km, but I should have replaced them sooner...

I think the studs are way to short

Is it normal to have to replace the original studs with longer ones when you add spacers? or are these just the wrong spacers for this truck? I see that there are spacers on the back too. I'm going to take off the back wheels and see what the stud length looks like back there.

Your spacers are a good reference for stud length

Hey Dean, thanks for the advice. I checked the backs and they are the same. I also checked the stud length on the truck and on the spacers and they both have 1" of threads (the spacers also have an extra 1/4" that's not threaded).

These are the rears.

So ???. It's obvious that the PO was running these for quite a while so there must be enough thread there to hold them. Dunno at this point, but I sure don't want to replace all of the studs!

You'll wish you did when the front studs snap. Easier in the garage than the bush.

Little update here. I've been driving BB King Scrappy around for the week, just around town for a while 'til I'm sure all the wheels are going to stay on. Took her to work on Friday and ran a bunch of errands and all is good. Not sure what the issue is with the 3B not having power, but I have been accelerating up to 120 on uphill grades. So far I have no issue with the power. It's not going to win any land speed records, but It'll go the limit and that's good enough for me. On a related subject, how do you think it would handle towing a Boler-like trailer? I've been thinking of getting rid of the Ranger and if this can tow my trailer then I just might do it.

Progress-wise I've order new quarters from Quebec and they should be here beginning of July. This weekend I fixed the rust through in the wheel wells and discovered another rust hole in the drivers side floor. Driver's side was the worst needing three patches and the passenger side only needed one at the front. It's a PIA to repair the wheel wells though because of all the "ribs". They are a bit rough because I don't have the right tools to grind out the welds in those ribs but I'm not too concerned.

I think I might have discovered the battery drain too. As I was working today I noticed the interior light on and am guessing that was the issue before as I usually leave the doors open when I work in the garage.

Sweet little 70. Sure it will tow a boler. A turbo would really make able. Aren't those like 2k lbs

Nice wheel well patches. That paint match is a bit red...

It will tow that no problem. You won't pass anyone at 120Kph and the short wheel base will tell you that you are towing something, but you can drive right into the campsite and pull a u turn instead of backing in.

Yeah, it's a light trailer, around 2000 lbs. There is probably a turbo in my future. Just not sure when. So far I'm ok with the power.

Really? The kid at Canadian Tire told me it would be an exact match!

There's a guy in Ontario who sells take-off parts from mine trucks. I'm sure most of you have seen his ads. I'm interested in the snorkels he has for sale. They're only $40 but they com off of HZJ 79's. Just wondering if anyone knows how this will fit on a 70? To my untrained eye it looks like it will fit fine. Here's the link.

I'm pretty sure 79 fenders are different so the fit won't be so good. Salmon has a couple snorkels for 70s from what I Remeber. I'd try him
