Would it make more sense to do both starter and PHH at the same time?PHH easier if starter is removed?

Oh HELL yea. As a matter of fact, the PHH, starter contacts and fuel filter are all a complimenting course, followed bya dessert of 4 Tylenol and a 6-pack of Shiner beer.

I did remove the upper downpipe bolt but I didn't want to go moving the transmission dipstick tube around, which was why it was so hard. Once I finally gave in and dropped the starter, the new hose was on in 15 minutes.

I should have replaced it when I took this pic. It was obviously replaced at some point with cheap a$$ crap that blew a week after I took this picture...

E-mailPHH.jpg

Replaced it with Samco Sport Silicone. Its 60mm (Toyota calls for 50mm) 5/8ths blue silicone from Europe - rated from -58°F to +356°F with 2 Breeze Constant Torque Clamps - Awesome engineering. Used by Professional Motorsports teams... F1, FIA Rally, etc. Never have to replace or worry about the PHH again! PM if you are interested in a kit.

Okay... since Jim isn't going to do a DVD, I am setting up a website w/tutorial, tips, gallery and to sell the silicone kits and maybe a cheapo generic heater hose version for those who like to gamble. The kits will be available in stock and ready to ship overnight if necessary.

www.1fzfephh.com

It will be up by this weekend (7/17/05).

Together we can defeat the phh plague! :censor:

I've got it down to about an hour with no F-bombs, including changing the t-stat and flushing the coolant. Dropping the trans dipstick is not an option. It's two bolts, what's the problem? dropping the starter is not neccessary. I've got forearms like Popeye and I can get in there. Just one at a time, but how many do ya need? A hoist is nice. :D

I cut the cotter pin clamp with side cutters.

Liberal application of silicone spray.

Quality hose, but nothing space age. I spent $20 on hose for mine. I don't do that anymore. Mr. T didn't. It lasted 110K.

The bottom heater core hose. That one's a bastard. especially on a hot motor.

IH8 the fuel filter far more than the PHH. There's just no excuse for that one.

Did a customers truck at ULC in about an hour and a half. The aforementioned snap-on hose picks are beautiful, as are the remote hose clamp pliers.

I always remove the trans dipstick, DS tire, jack under frame and lower the axle.

I did mine in a gravel parking lot with the tire on the truck and limited tools. It was not fun.

Whats to hate? 2.5 feet of extensions with a well-placed universal on a 3/8" impact gets the rear bolt. Mr T even made it easier with a rubber hose on one side. (install rubber hose before bolting in filter).

First time was about a half hour. Got to do it right after doing a PHH. It was a fun day at work.

I'm getting ready to find out about the fuel filter. Not to hijack....but is the bottom heater core hose an item that causes a problem very often?

I'm not looking forward to it if it is. All of my hoses look great (the ones I can see and reach) and my PHH was perfect when I replaced it at 108,000. I wonder why some vehicles seem to fare so much better than others.

I think its all about heat and coolant flow/pressure. My PHH was bulging but had more life left in it but my truck had been regularly serviced by the dealer for 125K miles and had Toyota red coolant. Still had quite a bit of gray sludge though. I used Prestone heavy duty cleaner...comes as a powder in a yellow can and it did a great job of cleaning it out.

Jim, I'll do your next PHH, if you'll do my Birfields. ;-)

Nah. The only one I've found to have leakage problems other than the PHH is the one on the pipe above it.

The bottom heater core hose is a 1/2 hose as well, as opposed to the 5/8 everywhere else.

It might not be too hard if you thought ahead and made or bought a high creeper, one that goes above the engine and allows you to lay down across the top.

Heck, since I have been a long-time lurker and read practically every thread on the PHH before doing it last summer, it went smoothly--around 1.5 hrs. A little blood, but not too bad.

You guys make this sound like the birf job will be a cake walk in comparison!

Well, this newbie will be tackling the birf job within a few weeks, thanks to parts from CDAN and the video from Jim!

I'd rather do 4 birf jobs than one PHH.

Ok... with all the inquiries about the Silicone PHH Kits, I pushed to get the site up early.

Let me know what you guys think.

I am still working on the tutorials.

Quite enterprising. My Toshiba laptop sure doesn't like your fonts very much...it looks very blurry but otherwise is nice.

Thanks Jim... noticed that also... I think I fixed it. this is my first time designing and publishing.
