This so makes me want to buy a rolled rig... I had no idea the port-a-powers were so cheap.

Cheap and pretty much fool proof. This one is triple locked and runs great with lots of aftermarket doodads. I figured I could always make money parting it out if I got overwhelmed with the work it takes.

Looks great, I love it. I always liked the first gen 4runner and the older blazers that you could pull the top off. I think this is pretty cool if you have a huge shop to store it in 6 months out of the year. lol.

I'm scheming ways to make a removable top for it so hopefully I won't have to park it inside its whole life. And theres always the hardware store softop (aka a tarp). If my neighbors don't run me off it should be pretty budget friendly.

That last photo.... that's definitely a 90's kid MS Paint masterpiece right there.

On a serious note - should be interesting to see what you come up with and how it varies from others who have gone down this path!

All of my builds get started in MS Paint!! Who needs 3D modeling when you have the the color match tool?

Dude, that thing looks worse than the one rolled and am replacing! I'm watching your handy work! :)

Oh it's super s***ty. And let's use the term "handy work" VERY liberally. My #1 goal is getting a windshield inside this bad boy. After that I will let my creativity lead the way!!

Experience will show the opposite hand technique rivals any stationary cup holder currently on the market. :grinpimp:

Anyways. I got the rear pushed around so the doors close and the tailgate closes and latches.

So I went ahead and wacked the top off!!! Wham!

Obviously I had to see how much flex the rear end doesn't have. There will be a set of rear J springs for sale in the future. I'm going to go with stock springs in the rear and see what I need to do up front. I kinda like how these look nose high. Especially with some fender trimming out back.

I ripped all around the field and up and down the driveway. She's got a good bit of pep without all that ass in back. I might bob the thing too. Dunno yet.

It's finally not blowing huge clouds of oil smoke whenever I get on the gas. The air cleaner had about a quart of oil in it. Seems like maybe there was a bunch of oil in places it shouldn't have been. I also have no idea when the last time this thing was run for any length of time.

that 80 would make a great Rubicon beater...just saying ;) ;)

Two much fun !!

since you're making a roll cage, if you make a proper enough cage, have you thought about chopping off this windshield and somehow putting it on hinges so you can drop it forward. I'm thinking it's not square enough for the job... but it's a crazy idea of mine. -wondering if you've looked into it.

Yup. If I can't get the thing straightened up enough I'll probably slap a J**p frame on there. It would be too sad to sacrifice one from a 40...

I'm not a perfectionist. I like chopping s*** up and I like driving beaters. I have a newer vehicle to take me any place I absolutely need to be and the rest of the time I like to cruise around in turds.

A 70 would be way too legit for a guy like me. And this 80 runs perfectly, is 3x locked, and I got it for $1800. Even if I destroy the thing I've still got $$ in axles, wheels/tires, and the ARB.

Not sure I could find a 70 for that... But if I did....

That's just a cab on 80 chassis.

The beauty of a cab is the ability to stretch the wheel base, move rear axle aft, so that it has leverage to work, helping impart forces the heavy ass end you cut off used to kinda provide.

We all think cutting weight is a solution, and it is portion of a more holistic approach, but sans heavy ass, the 80 rear will hunt for traction and get jiggy with it when descending.

But if it's an $1,800 beater, at least give her a little dignity and bend up something kinda cool for a cage.

So all of this is for not.

Fiance and I were walking through Fred Meyer (a pseudo get-all type retail outlet slightly classier than Target) and she did it....

Grabbed a premade Starbucks bottled coffe. Though the top is round, the bottom is squond.... just like an 80 cup holder.

We made it home without rolling.... however the saga continues since it never made it out of the bag and actually into a cup holder....

I like a beater too.... Mine is a ~320k (dunno, speedo/odo don't work) 88 corolla All Trac wagon 5sp that's literally slower than a prius and had front end damage (probably some of the harder to find US body parts).

THATs funny! Well played. Looks like my work is done as long as I stick to premade, retail only, squound starbucks bottled coffee.

A cab would be legit. Personally, I like the look of 80s with the back roof chopped off, however, 80s don't appeal to me as a cab and flatbed, so a chop of that magnitude won't happen on this one. My thought is to drive it as is for a while while I get the bugs worked out - there are sure to be bugs post roll - and hunt for an fj40/45 cab to pop on there or a nice 80 body or something else.... The frame seems to be in good shape, so if I found another 80 body (ahem @jcj_78FJ40 ) I could do that swap and have a decent locked cruiser.

All it takes is time and (hopefully not tons of) money.

I dig the work you do @Delancy, but I just can't bring myself up to the same extreme level of OCD!! I just recently read your whole thread on Pirate. When are we getting some updates on your project?

I have a windshield frame that I am getting ready to cut out of a rig if you want it, I would donate it to the cause.

I love running around in Foo, (link below) so I know you will enjoy this rig. I did add a 40 bikimi top as the sun beating down on passengers was brutal.

Cheers,

Shipping from KS might be a deal breaker. I'll let you know what unfolds with my current frame.

It's getting closer. The body is still in about an inch at the top passenger corner of the windshield frame.
