It looks like I have some work to do...

I am scared of what I may find in my air cleaner after the VERY DUSTY first Sunday of the tree event. I filled up tonight and checked the mileage. I got only 8mpg on my last tank. I did put on ~50 off road miles on this tank during the second sunday of the tree run, but 8MPG is the worst fill-up I have had since I owned the truck

8mpg...Yikes!

Yep. pretty bad.

I finished my tune-up this weekend. The old air filter was pretty dirty, and a couple of the plugs were slightly eroded/fouled. I noticed that the truck was idling too high. After a little looking, i realized that my idle control screw was pretty loose, so after adding a little sealant to keep it from moving, I adjusted and it's now right where it is supposed to be. I am guessing that this was a big part of my bad mileage, since it idled quite a bit during the second Sunday of tree patrol.

A little package showed up on my doorstep today, all the way from Australia. I will post some install photos when I get around to putting this in:

Right on! Can't wait to see a locked Frank in action.

Thanks again for coming over the other day and taking a look at the Vortec. Ordered some goodies myself. :grinpimp:

Nice. I will try to make it over again sometime soon to see your progress. The 60 is cleaning up nice. Are you going to start a build thread?

Yes! I was actually going to ask where the locker was I. The last parts picture. You're gonna love the extra traction and they are pretty unobtrusive on the streets. Great addition to an already sweet rig!

There a link to it in my signature, it's in the 60 section........might move it over here. ???

Hope to see the Frank out on Schubarth this weekend. :steer:

Lokka Install:

I got some garage time this afternoon and jumped right in to installing my rear locker. After draining the gear oil, I tried to remove the fill plug. It was nice and stuck, so I took the cover off with the plug still in. A shot of what was inside when I started the job:

First, the center pin is removed from the carrier. After a little rotation, 2 of the gears just drop away. Then, pushing the wheels into the differential allows you to remove the clips from the inside of the axle shafts. I think that this varies on the FZJ's since you guys have a full-floating rear. Finally, slide the remaining gears and thrust washers off of the axle shafts, and you have removed everything that must be removed.

This locker re-uses the thrust washer and cross-pin from the factory setup. You have to check 3 different clearances during 2 different mock-assembly steps before you assemble the whole thing. Here I am using a feeler gauge stack to check the clearance between the "cams":

If everything is in spec, and mine was, you can go ahead and assemble. If things are not in spec, you may have to replace or machine the thrust washers to get the required clearances. The instructions for assembling the locker are terrible, including a few misleading pictures, but after a pause to figure things out, this is the end result:

It took about 2 hours to disassemble, install the locker, and do their simple pre-driving functionality test. It took another 2 hours to get the stuck bolt out of the inspection cover:

I'm going to clean and repaint the cover, do some rust removal on the axle housing and paint that, too. I will post up a pic of everything back together when I finish up.

I had to drill my fill plug out when I did mine last year. It was in TIGHT! PO must have done some maintenance on it as well and rounded it off like nobody's business.
