That's awesome that you built those! I was just wondering about it. Never seen bolt on sliders. I've seen them but I haven't if ya get what I mean. Never seen them installed before.

My redline sliders are bolt on and the passenger side moved about a 1/4" rearward on Blanca somewhere... Maybe when I hit the 1/4" plate cat protection so hard that I took a gouge out of the front edge of it. Without those I would have destroyed my rockers beyond recognition! And I'm glad I didn't waste the time painting them pre-trip too. I'm also very glad I added heavy duty gussets between the frame mount and the horizontal bars or they may have torn right off.

Glad they held up. Did you make it out of Blanca without any damage (other than the cat plate)?

I scraped a bit of paint off of the bottom of my sliders during install. I'm not going to bother touching it up for the same reason...It's just going to get rubbed off again.

Any of you other 80 owners get hot feet? I found this thread and ordered the Bryke Racing bearing to replace the OEM steering/firewall seal. My seal was shot and I think this is likely the source of the hot air on my feet. I will post my impressions when I get this put in, but I am hopeful that this will solve the problem.

I got the part I mentioned in the last post in the mail today, and got it modified and installed. It seems to seal the steering shaft to the firewall well, and it eliminated the side to side (but not the rotational) play that was present in the steering shaft. I'm sure this will at least keep water and hot engine air out when I drive, and maybe even improve steering feel. I will update later, but here are a few shots:

So I found an issue today with my seal replacement. It's not so much the seal replacement as my rag joint, and it can be seen in the last picture above. The pins on the rag joint are not staying inside the slots in the opposite half, so the joint is popping when I steer. I took it all apart tonight and can't find any issues with the way I put things back together, so I'm assuming that the rubber in the joint is just too stretched out and that I was probably "just getting by" with it before. I'm going to have to order a new one before I can hit the trails again.

Is there a collapsible shaft on the other side of the fire wall? Looks like your steering shaft may be too short and is stretching out the rag joint. If you had to force things apart to get room to get the joint apart, you may have inadvertently shortened it. Those collapsible shafts can be rusty and hard to move as they get old. Might have plastic pins that need to be melted out too.

Yes, there is a collapsible shaft, and I had the same feeling about the situation. I really didn't have to force this thing apart. It separated easily. I have given the shaft between the steering box and rag joint as much of a pull as possible. It has a ribbed steel section that is very stiff but looks like it is designed to collapse or bend in a crash, kind of like a dryer vent hose. I think that the rubber on the rag joint is much too soft. I'm going to replace it and see what I get. If there is still trouble, I think that I will have to remove the shaft to the steering box and stretch it out a bit.

Thanks for the advice, Luke.

A new OEM rag joint worked like a charm. I think mine was just stretched out of shape from old age, and barely engaging the pins before I disassembled it. Probably better I found a problem in the garage than out on the trail. You can see the new one is a bit taller. I wonder if Mr. T did a small design update to address the problem I encountered.

In the interest of testing my newly repaired steering, I took the kiddo out for a very last minute trail test drive. We ran up Rampart Range Rd from WP, took 300U to 300V. We stopped, and the kiddo bagged her first soda can, using the bb gun I had when I was a kid. The snow started coming down a bit. We took 300V back to rampart and then Ran 323 and 324. We headed back south on Rampart, ran 303 to the dead end, then followed rampart out into the Garden of the Gods. I have not had the chance until today to drive that south part of rampart through the burn scar and into the city. The northern areas we covered, especially 323, had up to 3" of snow in the shady areas. Here are a few shots:

Glad to see you've got it fixed. Great photos, thought about loading the kids up for a quick trip today...looks like I should have.

Maybe i should have posted/called. Sorry. It seems like the last minute stuff doesn't usually come together. This was conceived around 9:45 this morning and we left the house around 10:45. Pretty last minute.

Since The Frank isn't good at getting anywhere quickly, I thought I would work on making the ride more enjoyable.

In a past life, I was a car audio installer, and always had a nice system. I kinda let it go for a while, but my beautiful wife gave me a subwoofer for Christmas, and I had this old amp sitting around, so I thought I would do something a bit custom. It came out looking pretty clean, and it sounds good so I am a happy camper.

That's super sweet. I got out of the stereo game a long time ago too, then bought the Cherokee from heather and remembered what I was missing in my music. Won't be giving it up again. Welcome back!
