Had a 1976 Celica. Was fun for a kid like me back then. I think I paid $3500 for it at a stealership in Penticton. Then paid another $1500 for paint in 82 in Princeton with me stripping it all down to bare metal and doing the prep for paint. Was a kid and didn't know better. It was pretty easy to work on. As a student down in Vancouver I blew a clutch and then the tranny and then the rear end in just over a year. Replaced them all in an apartment underground with minimal tools. That was when they would still let people turn a wrench on their vehicle in apt parking.

Prior to this turd there was my toyota hilux with 20r. I knew better but still had to have a Land Rover. I built in the parkade of my apartment - in fact all three of my Rovers were restored this way.

THen I got this 1966 Series II 109. I owned it for 6 months. Did a complete rewire, painted the engine and redid the interior - I made $6k on it - selling it to a Land Rover car salesman who came up from Seattle to purchase it. Had the hard top for it too. With the overdrive gear splitter I had 16 forward speeds.

Then there was the third one. 1970 Land rover Lightweight. It started civilian life as a roll over from the Suffield army base in Alberta. The truck was designed to fit into a a C-130 Hercules. One guy in about an hour could strip the body down so you could stack them within the aircraft. One of six ever released to Canadian civilians. I hot rodded it by putting a two barrel carb on it. Maybe had 90 horse after. Adapted a hard top for it too.

I was pretty skinny then - think I was 30 -31

Finally stopped being a masochist and left the dark period in my life and bought my first cruiser 1985 BJ 70.

After the lady pushed me into the telephone pole. Snapped the axle stub. The 5 speed gear knob of this truck is the transfer lever knob in my 1997 lx 450 (I tell people its for sport mode). This accident happened five weeks after installing my AXT turbo. Straight pipes - sounded like a 5 ton.

Life after 70 was my 1985 BJ 60 with the swapped AXT. Here she is at the 2005 Cruiser Days at some Surrey high school. I got a speeding ticket on the upper levels highway in it. Told the cop I was going to frame it. He let me go with a warning :) Turboed it at 327,000 km. I put a 61 series JDM frame under her and 4:11's

And when she rolled over:

Truck may still be alive in Prince George. I bumped into it by accident there about 5 years ago.

Most people will recognize this truck. This was its first motor swap. Since then it has received a new floor, a 13bt, custom paint, jdm frame and and and.... I felt privileged to just hang out and help with its transformations. Today it sports the bumper I had on the rear of my 60. A few of us just finished Whipsaw and it was there. It once went through Whipsaw in two wheel drive.

Damn, that was a nice looking truck John!

I was more interested in the Celica, I had a '77 from Cali, 20r motor, AC, 5 speed and factory CB radio :steer:

Enigma,
You'll be happy to know I found the old "Tracking Video". I will need to digitize it

I was just thinking about this today. I think Herb P digitized my copy years ago but has been reluctant to publish it anywhere without releases from the 'celebrities'.

Would love to see that video; Heard lots about it over the years.

I doubt at this point, even the celebrities can't remember the details :)
I'd say post away, I saw a few of the guys this summer, trust me, they look much older. Like not recognizable from the video days, except maybe Geby.

Here is a few old shots of my pre landcruiser days. I had a nice 83 shortbox in 95 but was stolen and never seen again-miss that truck. Then got the 86 4runner in 96, last shot was coming back from sloquet hot springs. Funny how the 4runner was 10 years old when I bought it, 4cyl 5spd with no power windows, locks, ac or sunroof yet it seemed like a luxury vehicle at the time compared to the 83 and lots more power. I added the MT's, rear bumper and side steps. I don't know if anyone was around making sliders or swing away bumpers then.

The old red 82 in the driveway next to the 4runner was a frame off wreck I built up with 4 lift and 33s and then discovered how gutless the 22r is with that stock gears. Eventually traded it in for a 98 V6 Tacoma which felt like a rocket at the time.
