My truck has a 4" lift and is on 35"s with stock gearing. I would love a set of 3.70s since I like to drive around 72 mph on the highway and even with my tires that spins my engine to around 2600-2700 rpm I believe.

3.70s would hurt your economy IMO. I had 35s on mine, and 4.11s, with 4.11 gears it was a little sluggish taking off on hills, and really too highly geared in steep off road conditions. These engines are happy at the RPM you are cruising at.
With taller gearing, you'll have to feed in more fuel to get it moving and for hills etc due to a reduction in torque at the wheels. Economy is not likely to improve

I still wish I had them because I don't feel like it's sluggish at all and first gear is still low and goes by super quick. I don't think it worth the money even with 3.70 ring and pinion sets floating around right now but the people that have installed them seem to love them. I have been driving my fj62 with h55 and 2H for too long with the gasser 4.88s installed so in tired of short first gear and low speeds on the highway.

Would you recommend it?

I honestly don't mind the look of it. Again you have a 80 series and I have a 70 series.
Race Composites make the scoops and I had to contact them Via EBay because I couldn't get any info on their STI scoop via the website/their contact information was wrong) they are the FRP blue colour ones.

There are a few other slick scoops coming out for the Aus market but they weren't available when I did mine.

Only reason I went top mount was because getting a front mount would have been a really custom show to get everything to fit.
I didn't have the time to mess with it like that. I'd recommend front mount personally.

The cost of that Ebay top mount is really tempting. I feel like if I use that kit, a bigger scoop and a spal fan, it would be "good enough" without having to add all that pipping to my engine compartment.

Hey guys,

I just read online about adjusting the boost compensator without removing the aneroid rod. I didn't think that was possible... is it?

What did you read? Where's the link? Maybe it was for a different style pump? Hard to comment without also reading it.

It was an LCOOL link... looks like it was for the 1HD-FT. Maybe that one's different.

Welcome to Land Cruiser Owners On Line

I read this the other day. Well it would work to a degree, you should really pull the pin so you can set the preload correctly and make use of the full length of the pin.

Check out the YouTube video a few pages back. I'd link but I'm on mobile.

X2, if I was going to start messing with the pump settings, I wouldn't' want to do it blind. I'd pull the pin and grind it so it can be easily reinserted, and then you can calibrate the travel of the pin to your boost level. Stock boost is 10psi, if you're running 25psi, it stands to reason the spring pre-load will need to be adjusted so that you're seeing full travel of the pin profile, and not getting into fuel cut at high boost.

Sounds like good advice, you guys. I'll see if I can pull the pin this weekend. I just wanted to add a little preload for my commute. I can tell I need it.

yes it is, I did it many times, but it is a PITA, and difficult to tel how much youv'e moved the star wheel.
easier to remove the pin and grind a bevel on it to ease reinstall

Thanks for the advice. I'll just do it the right way. I've seen a guy put a schrader valve in a tube and run a bike hand pump to cycle the spring range of motion online. I've got a compressor with a pressure regulator on it at home. Have any of you guys rigged up something easy to take advantage of something like that?

I've used the compressor with the pressure regulator. Just have another trusted gauge hooked into the system and adjust off of that. Don't trust the pressure regulator gauge at the lower pressure.

Ok guys,

Going to dig into the the boost compensator today. So, to increase preload, you rotate the gear under the aneroid counter clockwise, right?

I drove my shiny new 90' HDJ81 home from South Dakota yesterday. It runs strong with great response off the line but I believe it's being over-fueled. If I am going 100K/H and I stand on the throttle, I am over 1000f on the (post turbo until I change it) EGT gauge in a matter of seconds.

Also, I ran a local trail today and ended up slowly backing up a hill, feathering the throttle a bit. It was smoking and smelling pretty bad.

What to adjust? back off the main fuel screw a bit? Turn the top screw down as well? I haven't checked the travel on the pin yet.

I'd possibly run it as is and observe a little longer, you won't kill it in the space of a few days, just keep an eye on EGTs.

Then probably start by backing off the main fuel screw 1/8 - 1/4 turn and optimise the boost compensator settings.
When you're happy you've got it running as good as possible and still got safe EGTs, then you can potentially feed it more fuel.

Stock boost still? I'd start with adding a manual boost controller and turning the boost up to 15psi, truck will be much happier at highway speeds with lower EGT's.
