Wow...those doors look awesome !!!

Some side mirror info...

My '64 had the stock rectangular mirror shown in the first picture below, and mounted on the side like this as well. I did not have one on the passenger side, and would love to see a stock picture of a '64 with a passenger side mirror, (as I would like to install one) but I am not sure it came as stock...

If you don't have one, I am not sure if Toyota still sells them, but I have seen them at SOR; Specter Off-Road Land Cruiser Parts - Page 166 Land Cruiser Mirrors

I have also seen some round mirrors on '64s as in the second picture...of an older sulfur yellow FST 40, so I am not sure if the rectangular mirrors were a "bigger" option in 1964.

The last picture is a round mirror on a '61 or '62...I just love this picture of this old FST...

Hope this helps

Many thanks Dean,
Mine has reinforcing plates for the mirror mount holes (on the inside of the cab obviously), but only on the drivers side. If I added a mirror on the passenger side it wouldn't have those reinforcement plates.

I will call SOR and see if I can get a mirror set up.

Question again for ya. Are the mirror rod and head painted to match the tub? Looks like in some pictures the rod is body and head is silver and in some all is body...

Also what color is the interior rear view mirror (mine is rust on black!).

Chris

That I have seen, side mirror is all body color...brackets, arm and head.
My interior mirror was pewter.

Lets call it done....

OK, so it has been a while since I have posted up. After a few days of waiting for the canvak to dry (oh my god it stinks), I was now able to take out the rig and enjoy a bit. Heck, I gave the innagural car wash, and even clay-barred her. Had a minor amount of overspray in areas from my side projects, now she is smooth as glass. Ya, I know, the tire dressing my have gone a little over board!!!

Here is the net of it. I am done (in my eyes) with everything EXCEPT the running boards and I am missing the knob for my windshield air vent. I have the pyramid vinyl in the mail tho, and need to fab the panels that hold the vinyl to my running boards. The knob, I just need to find one and so far have been without luck.

Not all perfect by any means, but my goal here was to be a close to stock as reasonable ($$ and time wise). I brought back Sulfur Yellow and LOVE the color. Pictures do not always do this paint justice, and when not in direct sunlight there is a definite "avocado" tint to it.

Anyways, as a recap. THIS is what I wanted!!!

I just love that old 40 out on the tarmac. Here is my version of it.

Whatcha think? Note my windshield wipers are "goofy". One of my motors is "upside down" and thusly is out of sync. Was like this when I bought the rig. The motor even hangs low, but I took them apart when I restored them and couldn't find a way to re-orient it. Alas, it works fine so go figure.

Here are some more pics in the driveway:

OK, so maybe I am not totally done. What goes in these holes below and above the windshield vent???

And later in the day yesterday the family and I locked the hubs and shot up to the top of a hill in my neighborhood for a picnic style dinner. Holy crap in 4 Low this baby just mules up hills! Sorry, back to cell phone quality here ;-)

Was great fun. Now I am ready to put together a tool bag and venture outside the neighborhood.... I will read the FAQ and find peoples recommended list of tools to take with ya. Anyone else want to meet up at Hollister Hills and four-by with a noob?

Looks great!

Looks fantastic!!!

Well done...

Innaugural off road trip

The family and I got out in the FJ this weekend "off road" for the first time.

I live about 4 miles from Hollister Hills, which has an off road park.

The rig did great, with 2 concerns. Puttered around in 4WD High the whole time and stayed on tame roads.

Firstly, and I had noticed this before, but it was pronounced during long trips at slow speed. The exhaust gives me a strong case of "hot feet". Has anyone got a solution to shielding the exhaust under our rigs?

Secondly, the ride was rougher then I expected. Stock suspension with new SOR generic shocks. Curious if these are especially firm shocks or if that is just the cost of having a 40. My wife (of generous bosom ;-) was struggling.

Had a great time tho! Here is a pic. Oh, and I completed my frames for my steps and have the diamond mat. Just need to prime and paint the frames.

My future plan was/is, (going with my CJ7 experience, and reading up on the subject) to go stock springs with Bilstein 5100 shocks, to add some 3M UHMW Tape between the leafs on the springs, and to air down the rear tires by a couple of pounds as compared to the fronts...the airing down of the rears was mainly to compensate for the lack of weight any cargo would have offered...I do not foresee me carrying much cargo when I'm done.

I haven't tried it yet, but UHMW tape is supposed to reduce friction in leaf springs, especially at the moment of initial movement. This is supposed to smooth out the springs and ride a little.

Anyways, this is my plan for my rig...hopefully someone will chime in with more info, and some solid feedback if my plans are right or wrong

Edit:...and new seat cushions ;)

I'll shoot ya some pics under the hood D. I did add a Toyota radiator overflow (thanks cruiser dan) as I was tired of worrying about the level dropping over time, and I keep my dog in the garage at times...

I smell another off road trip this weekend. The trip last weekend was to a new section of the park and I was literally the only one out there, not officially open to the public.

I am thinking of taking off the shocks and seeing how she rides to determine if my shocks are too "tight". Springs are original with nothing done besides a little POR....

more pics

Guys and gals. I got my step frames all fabbed up and painted. Check out the results. Sorry for cell phone pics.

D, took a couple under the hood as well. Notice that I went and got a toyota overflow bottle.
