"The Great Pumpkin"- 45 Crew Cab buildup

John, you had me worried for a few days. The pics in the garage look much better than your earlier ones. FG in 4 weeks. What else are you going to do before then?

yeah, the first pics were with my s***ty cameraphone. The came out really bad. Didn't do the color justice. My neighbor literally started yelling and jumping up and down when he first saw it painted. I can't stop staring at it to be totally honest.

Degreased the engine that's going into the crew cab. I was hoping it would come out looking like a chromed out hot rod engine but it looks good enough for a 4X4.

Things to do before the FG (only 3 weeks)
swap engine, trans, and transfer
new exhaust
New shocks
title and registration
paint and install new hood
check brakes, fluids, tune up etc.

Sounds like a lot but most will be done by next weekend. Gives me a few weeks to fix the unexpected stuff that will pile up.

I'll take your username Orange45. Jsaltlick was a stupid nickname I had in college for about 2 weeks. Didn't think I'd be on MUD for more than one oe two days. Actually your avatar is what inspired me to go for the darker color on the bigger truck

Think I screwed myself. I was degreasing the new engine and all went well. Got new valve covers to replace the rusty ones. Opened up the pass side and there was water under the cover. A bunch of water. The gasket must have failed. This could be a minor setback or a complete disaster. Painted the engine, headers, trans, and Xfer. Looks purdy. Hope I don't need to rebuild a rebult engine.

Painted a new hood and came out great. swapped out the one in the pics since it was dented up

Did cheapo bedliner-in-a-can. Looks fine. Wanted a thin coating so it could be stripped easily if need be down the road.

G'day John,

Can you start the engine as it is? If so, then drain the oil and re-fill. Next, pull the plugs and take a squiz in the plug holes- just to make sure there is not water in there. Then fire it up and let it get to temp. Let it run for 5 minutes or so, and all of the water will be gone. Not disasterous by any means, but don't let the water sit there.

What year is the new hood? Did you keep the little stainless steel caps that go under the lip of the old bonnet? You can simply rivet those onto the replacement bonnet.

Cheers,

Josh

if you can't start the engine then pull the valve covers, spray lots of pb blaster on all the moving parts, down the carb, pull the plugs, spray some in there, then crank it over with the starter and let it bake in the sun. rotate from time to time to get all the moisture outta there.

i'd drain the oil asap as well.

Went down to my mechanic this morning and confessed my sins. He wasn't too concerned. He said since I had the breather on and the hoses hooked up that odds are that all the water was trapped in the valve area and didn't go down the oil return. He said since the gaskets were there it would have limited the amount of water to flow inside so odds are I'm fine. I dried up all the sitting water anyway so he thinks I'm all set.

Maybe he just wants the extra money when it needs to be rebuilt!

I hope your mechanic's right John. Damn the paint looks great in those garage pics. Got any pics of the inside of the rear cab?

Paint is pretty good for a half assed job. Can't tell it's a rattle can job from 10 feet.

Post #11 has the only pic of the inside rear. Pulled the jump seat already. Gonna put a bench in back. Have a line on a cheapo rear bench from an old Blazer with the armrests.

G'day John,

This is Patches84. I just wanted to let you know that I checked HJ47 on a whim, and no-one had it, so it is mine!! I will be changing over my old stuff to here, and then closing Patches84 in favour of his address.

Cheers,

Josh

Didn't know we could change!!! Interesting......

No. I had to buy a new set. Missipboy got those other rims. Wish I kept them!

UPDATE- My mechanic called and he has 4 cars in his garage waiting for parts. None of the parts for those cars (mint 1963 T-bird, 53 Alfa Romeo, etc)will make it until tomorrow so there's no room to do the swap. None of those cars can be put outside. Motor swap is postponed until next Friday. I'll be very pissed if it's not ready for the Fall Gathering 2 weeks later.

get down with the Cygnus!!!

Shot a quick coat of cygnus white on the top. Pic of the rack as well.

The best way to change is to ask Woody to change your username. Then you get to keep all your settings and post-count.

John,

Looking good! I did the same thing with Patches, only I put the new hood on because I wanted the windscreen tie down hooks. Not that either of us will ever take the roof off to use the hooks (especially my roof- it took 6 people to get my roof off when I painted Patches, and the same 6 people plus my wife to get it back on), but I like the way the bonnet looks with them on there.

Delayed projects on Cruisers are never wasted, I figure. They are just excuses to do other things. :) When are you going to get the registration on there so you can take 'er for a spin?

I didn't know about asking Woody- I wish I had done that. Oh well. I don't think you should change your name though; I like it.

Cheers,

Josh
