so what is every one's favorite home defense loads in 9mm?

The one that hits where I aim...

In all seriousness...you can spend many hours/days/weeks reading through all the literature of penetration/expansion and the "deadliness" of any given load/bullet/feet per second combination.

I like heavier than lighter rounds for the 9mm, 147g bullets instead of a faster 115g. I base this on how my reloads shoot for competitions, not any ballistics research. I like the feel of the 147g at the same power factor than a 115g load ((power factor = bullet mass X feet per sec) X .001), so its what I prefer to shoot with.

I don't change loads for different situations, I load what I know reliably cycles through it and I can reliably shoot. I've seen people shoot with great variance when a +p round gets dropped into magazine of "regular or practice" rounds. Considering the gun in my safe could be used by my wife and/or daughters, I also want them to be familiar with the rounds.

I guess I'm naive but believe that a couple well place shots "should" slow most people down enough that I can run my 56 yr old @ss away from the threat. If I have to empty the full mag of 9mm and they are still coming, having a +p won't matter much, they'll talk to Mr. 11-87.

I'm sure that people that protect our country and/or citizens may offer a different perspective than mine and want as much punch to each rounds as possible...

^ this, this is the world i have been living in lately, and thanks for all the other good info. What brand do you shoot? I have read a lot of good stuff about the PDX1, especially with the glock. Thoughts?

I am with Jerry on this, shoot what works for you. Personally, I have a 45 loaded with 230 grain hollow points and a 12 gauge with 00. They are what I feel comfortable with and shoot well. Heather prefers her .357.

Agreed with one caveat. Shoot what shoots best from your weapon of choice AND is a load you can consistently hit what you aim at. It you are lucky, you will find multiple loads that fit the description. Assuming this is the case, you can then make a decision on other factors. I personally use performance tests done to FBI standards. ATK (Federal, CCI, and Speer) publish their results on their LE ammo page.

Finally got around to mounting the scope .... Not an easy to conceal piece.

Good points by everyone. For my personal use, we load all of our defense guns with Hornady Critical defense. I am a huge fan of Hornady ammo and cannot say enough good things about them based on my experience with them. My one piece of advice would be this. Some people spend more coin on the defense load, load up their guns and let them sit. Whatever you decide to use make sure you shoot it as well. I am fine with practicing with the target ammo to save some money, but it's critical to shoot what you plan on defending yourself with. I know it sounds simple but overlooked a lot. Hornady CD (40 S&W) runs about $20-25 for 25 rnds where most basic loads are under $20 per 50. I know I hate shooting ammo that costs twice as much but the piece of mind is worth it IMO.

I've actually been kicking around doing a little testing. I have some sheetrock and insulation left from my kitchen remodel. I am thinking about framing some 2x2 sections and test firing different loads.

Agreed ... though my preference is Federal (to each his own). If you buy in bulk, the price comes down.

Additionally, if you can swing it, I recommend owning two copies of your primary carry weapon. Wear one of them out practicing, and shoot the other occasionally to ensure it functions and keep it maintained. The second one is the one you carry.

I just sold my G30. It is actually a fairly bulky gun. The width was tough for me to conceal and the ergos just are not as nice as the 1911. For concealability, I have no issues with the proper holster ... for me this is a Milt Sparks VM2 (VersaMax 2).

Capacity is possibly a viable issue, but when carried cocked and locked, a Kimber Ultra (or equivalent) carries 8 rounds in a fairly concealable package. And it is fairly easy to conceal an additional single stack mag.

well we finally got to spend some time at the range today and decided on the Gen 4 Glock 19. The guns that were in consideration were the Glock 19, Glock 17, Springfield XD, Smith and Wesson M&P and Ruger 9mm. It will be a couple weeks before the buying process even begins as i was place on "the list". I was impressed with the :princess:. Megan had never held a hand gun before today, and below is her first 50 rounds at 10 yards.

That's awesome.

so what is every one's favorite home defense loads in 9mm?

9mm for home defense? Doesn't make sense.
Nothing says "freeze or die m-f" better than racking a pump shotgun.
12 ga if you can handle it, smaller if not, doesn't make too much difference.
Most any load is about the same at home defense range unless you live in a very large home. Birdshot is safer if you have close neighbors or a large household.
I use #4 rabbit shot on top backed up by #4 buck with 4 pcs 00 buck and one slug in the butt sleeve of my 870 Tac.

You probably meant 'personal defense' in other words concealed weapon carry.
My favorite 9mm load is 45 ACP or 357 mag :bounce:
Nothing does point and shoot better for me than a 1911 and I also like single action so I use a Kimber Ultra CDP for most carry. If I want to go lighter then an SP101 1-7/8" in an IWB gets the duty.
If I want to slip something in my pocket for very low risk dress or backup I really like my Sig P238.

^ well the gun is largely for my wife. She cannot handle shot guns very well, so a pistol it is. I already have the shotgun for me for home protection duty. As far as the 9mm goes, that is also with her in mind. i would prefer something larger, but she can handle the recoil of the 9mm very well. When i no longer live in DC, the Glock 19 will most likely be my CC gun. So this is a plus as well.

My current load of choice for my 12 Ga is 3.5 inch #2. I live in an apt, so blowing holes in the walls with 00. At the ranges i would be shooting, under 5 yards, the 3.5 number 2 would take your head off without wounding a neighbor.

also, here is a cross post from my facebook on my reaction to Obamas proposed gun laws.

Well President Obama, as a gun owner, and gun rights advocate, i am ok, even firmly agree, with almost everything you have stated. I think it is stupid not to do back ground checks for those buying guns. It is also stupid to sell to crazy people. So lets get working on the mental health aspect of treatment and prevention of ownership to the mentally ill. A safe gun ownership campaign is also an excellent idea. additionally, lets crack down on those illegally using guns. Lock them up and throw away the key. I am with you all the way here. To compromise, I am even OK with registering my weapons like we have to in DC, although i would prefer not. But it should be a compromise, and all sides have to give and take. Where you start to lose me is the 10 round magazine limit. Why 10? Where did this arbitrary number come from? This puts the law abiding gun owner at risk of gun crimes. What do i do when i have multiple intruders in my home? Well, i will have 2 guns, so i can have 20 rounds readily available. What does this do? it causes more fire arms in America. I think it would be much smarter, and a compromise, again COMPROMISE, to take away extended magazines. While i am not a fan of this either, there should be give and take. For example, no 30 round mags for Glocks. Thus, the 15 round mag that comes with a Glock 19 and fits 100 % in the grip should be ok. 15 rounds give an individual a much better chance at survival when faced with multiple criminals. This is how the gun is manufactured out of the box. So i will give you the 30 rounders to ban to keep my gun in its stock configuration. Additionally, this means a Benelli Super black eagle can only legally hold 4 rounds. No extended tubes. This is compromise. Just a thought. . . i know the left is tired of hearing it, as it has been beaten into the ground, but guns will not go away in the US, thus the majority of gun legislation is only applicable to the law abiding citizens. Denying this is foolish. Again, you should at least be willing to compromise on some level. On a final Note, gun free zones are a joke for our security. Gun free zones are fabricated protection for the ignorant who do not want to believe what kind of evil actually exists in our world. Every public shooting since at least 1950 in the U.S. in which more than three people have been killed has taken place where citizens are not allowed to carry guns. Anybody up for some actual debate on policy, and God forbid compromise? (sorry for using the word God, i know that can be highly offensive to some) This is just some food for thought.

Man there is nothing at all wrong with a 9mm. If I'm in the house, yeah I'd love to reach for my shotgun. The 9mm may have been undergunned back in the day but with the advances in modern ammunition the gap is far narrower that most people think. Sorry if it offends, but to say a 9mm won't get the job done is hogwash. As long as the dude isn't jacked up on PCP I'm fine with a 9. If I am in a scenario in which I have to use my firearm to defend myself the only thing I care about is ammo. I'd bet if we asked anyone that has been in a gunfight if they had too much ammo, the answer is hell no.

I remember a stat from my concealed carry class that involved officer related shootings. Of all the shots fired, they missed about 85% of the time.....These guys train every day and miss that much? I don't train that much so give me more ammo. I've attached a good read regarding ammo as well. enjoy.
