Email quote of the day in response to my Craigslist ad for the snowmobile trailer I'm selling:

"Oh hi I just read your book about the trailer …..now go fuxk yourself !"

 shudda known, but your alias as David threw me off.

Any input from anyone on the Kei truck? It's a Suzuki Carry. I'm thinking it would make a nice road legal ATV for up at our Camp. Similar dimensions to a side by side with a larger bed and more carrying capacity. Never mind the super powerful 660cc 3 cylinder motor. Drop down bed sides like a UTE.

U guys noticed that xtreeme 4x4 changed its name to xtreeme off road? Anyway they have a turbo mini truck build on it today

Yeah and the name change messed up my DVR not recording it for a few weeks until I figured it out.

check out this new 4runner. pretty cool.

The only good thing about that are the shocks. The XREAS ride /shock control is on the previous 4th gen and it usually has to get disconnected to accommodate a lift. Too many problems. The aluminum skids plates are petty nice if they are thick enough. Still too much plastic and overhang. Not as much ground clearance as 1-3rd gen. I think it will eventually be nice once the aftermarket catches up with it.

It is nice looking. That course was very weak huh. Can do that stuff in a car.

FYI lovers of vintage trucks who live in Mass!

Sales tax in Mass on the purchase of a vehicle is based on NADA guide value. Period. Even if your fixer-upper just happens to be [now] classified as a "classic" and its value doubled or tripled. High milage seems to be the only tax leniency.

While a '76 FJ40 is not a NADA "classic", yet, (evaluated low at $5K) that could change soon. My '76 Land Rover Series III 88 wan't "classic" when I bought it three years ago, its now evaluated low at $10K. (High value is $30K!!!)

Point being, while excise tax will not jump much, when (yes when) the FJ40s get reclassified as classic the initial tax hit will be epic. I'm seeing much higher prices for FJ40s than LR series trucks on ebay so, IMO, its only a matter of time. Hotrod and antique guys are tearing heir heir out over this. I'm reading no mercy form Mass for exemption either.

So what you are saying its the sales tax with be stupid high but the excise tax will remain reasonable? Do you currenty pay taxes on low value for all order cars. I thought it was on the high NADA value.

There should be a way that you can pay for an appraisal and only pay tax on the appraized value. That is so damn stupid. I'll just have to buy property up in NH and buy and register all my stuff up there.

Still MA is better than RI from a tax stand point. My car taxes last year in RI were $2200 and house taxes were $3300. My cars are only a year older and taxes were about $550 and the house is over twice the size with a ton more land and I'm paying $3,800. That and my homeowners insurance dropped.

Just wait until you fly back. Where is your layover before headding back to Boston? Hope its nice. You might be there a while.

Yes.

Do you [WE] currently pay taxes on low value for all order cars. I thought it was on the high NADA value.
NADA trade-in or low value, per MA dept of revenue.

From searching classic car forums, and read ing posts from MA residents, salvaged title and hi milage seem to be the only exceptions.

I import LR series trucks from CR, and this now changes significantly the economics of bring them in. Another good reason to get out of the LR business...

FJ40 have not hit "classic" status in NADA, yet. But I have looming sense it wont be long.

I hear you its probably not long off. I'm glad I currently have my two classics titled in MA. I guess its time to run out and buy that classic if you've been waiting for it. At least the excise tax will remain reasonable.

I'm surprised that a dealer hasn't come out to help get around this by offer a service to buy from a private party and sell for $X mount over. Seems like they could make a decent business by charging $300 per transaction just serving as the middle man. Say you found your classic you want to restore which when completed would go for $30,000 but they are charging $1,875 for taxes on it when you are only paying $5000 for the car. Taxes should be $312.50 on the car. Dealer steps in and charges you $300 to do the deal and you pay $612.50 instead of $1,875.
