If anyone is curious; there's a bit of a setback outside of Ian's or my control. We're working on it though.

Good news, I'm back in Utah. Bad news, the weather is s***. Maybe I can talk @cruiserdan into letting me roam around the museum next week to get my Cruiser fix. Assuming the wind blowing over my Tenere in this storm didn't do too much damage.. It just doesn't end.. 😁

This statement penetrates my very core.

I am looking forward to what you pick out for color. This is a fun build to follow along with...helluva retirement gift to yourself!

painted mine white. it was originally white, but this is the Lexus Ultimate White Pearl. I've got a diesel-swapped 80 (lx450) in the same color.

I really have not wanted to make this post, it’s time though.

DRAMA: We had (have) a few different painters across the parking lot from us. There is a paint booth and the landlord has rented out this side of the shop to three different painters now since I have been here. Painter #1 painted Tony’s frame, he screwed it up first go by going high gloss and also had tons of “shadowing”. He got it right the second time. Next painter did an 80-series for us that we took to bare metal. He did a good job and it came out real nice. He did some other things for us that turned out good too. So with the metal work pretty much done on the Troopy I hooked Tony and this painter up. Tony got a price and a rough timeline. Painter gets two $5k deposits out of Tony over the next three months or so and the Troopy gets pushed over in his shop. He does some work, not all of it is great. He then gets kicked out of his shop!!

I put Tony together with this clown, so I take full responsibility. That means my shop owes Tony for the unfinished work he paid for.

Chris who works for me has a four year degree in automotive restoration. So he knows paint & body work real well. We don’t have a paint booth though and we are not painting Cruisers. However we can do ALL the prep for paint, which we are starting on now.

This side we took down where there was to much filler and because there was a bunch of bare metal we had to spray some 2k epoxy primer. #1 rule with body filler is don’t lay it down on bare metal.

The spot on the door Chris did and is what we will be doing to the whole body on the Troopy. We will need to primer this side as well where it got over sanded and we have bare metal.

Hard to see when not in primer but this side is pretty much done and ready for primer.

Looks like we will have used about a gallon on body filler when done but as anyone who has done this kind of work knows, a lot ends up sanded off.

so what is your primer of choice?

2k epoxy, we also use self etching but the 2k is my favorite. The Troopy has had 2k, it comes in tan, gray and black. 🤗

We may use a 2k high build on the exterior, there is a few varieties of 2k epoxy primers. The Troopy needs a full spray with the 2k all around to seal it up before the final prep for paint. Best thing to do is go to your local auto paint supply shop and start chatting with them.

nice thing about self etch is not requiring as much prep, can reach anywhere. I have this self etch epoxy but not fully convinced , probably not as good as 2k

Like for example, after trying a bunch of different chassis paints we have found what we like the best from one particular auto paint shop. They all have something different but this is an industrial polyurethane enamel that they can gloss any amount or mix it in flat or satin as well. They can supply it for the gun or in rattle cans. For a DIY guy these rattle cans will give you great results and they are two part, same for the primer. That means it has a hardener and when you activate it you need to spray it before it is no good. All two parts in a can are this way. Here it will cost you $40+ per can but it is the best you are going to get in a can and slays hardware store paint or similar. So again for any of you DIY guys out there go get friendly with your local auto body supply shops. 🤙

Cheers

Dusty but this new floor is 🥰 even dusty!

A bit of a big deal to me to be getting to this stage in the build. Been a long road with the Hodgepodge! 😜
