Alright, back again. Slow with posts, lots of little jobs in the shop recently.
@Megadoomer our rigs are remarkably similar haha, maybe yours had a secret build admirer
Found a set of 91' FJ80 axles so I'll let you all chime in on what you think I should do to the suspension. I have all of the arms for the install, would just need to mount them and install some spring buckets on the frame.
Should I keep the stock FJ80 suspension setup front and rear -OR- do spring over rear end with 3 link front using a 12" - 14" travel shock or strut? Leaning towards Hellfire knuckle kit with ORI's and a 3 link to really make it ride nicely. 99' Tahoe springs in the back, call it a day. Thoughts??
New plan for the axles is to run a Detroit locker in the rear and an e-locker in the front. I have the same setup on my truck and it's unstoppable in all weather. I'm thinking 4.56's since it'll mostly see pavement and to preserve some economy. 5.29s and 37's on a 1uz get 15mph, not terrible but we can certainly do better.
So far the front end is off and the frame is getting cleaned of all excess brackets and fasteners. Going through the cab next to clean it out and get it ready to have the holes patched. Looking for a solid used engine soon so we can start mocking things up and seeing what goes where. I'll probably build the axles soon and do the rear suspension so more to come soon.
Upon removing the 3rd from the rear end I found some interesting things per usual. The carrier frame had been welded once before but those welds were ground down and then a Spartan locker was added. Whoever did the work left the carrier bearing cap adjuster wheels soooo loose that I could push the carrier back and forth between the races. The race was in horrible condition. Don't know how it made it 160 miles home without blowing something up but...........Toyota
