Brought mine in yesterday to have a new clutch installed and my mechanic didn't believe I painted my truck with a roller. He was amazed how good it looked.

Might as well try it out. You can always sand and spray if you don't like it.

ok here is a pic of the new rustoleum paint job!

I like the way your rig came out nice... I think that is close to the original color of mine... did you take a paint chip in?

bumping this thread for new blood.

I started on mine yesterday. ACE matched olive. I will be starting a thread up this weekend on it.

i want to give this a go, i want to cut the rear quarters as well as the rockers. is there a product like a sprayable primer/filler any one can recomend??? as well, what size wire to use for the mig? i got rust on the doors that needs to be grinded off badly as well as my wheel wells need some love. probally a lot of work in prep. it'll be more of a trail mobile so i can handle some imperfections.

Hello all, I have a question about this because I am really thinking of doing the roller paint job on my 80 series like Texaslawman. My question is I live on the east coast and it seems to rain quite a lot and I don't have a garage so I am wondering about a time frame how long to paint the whole body (no body work needed) and how long for paint to dry, overnight, a couple days etc..? Before I would start to wet sand? Another question is do you have to sand truck to bare metal for it to stick? Or can you just scuff original paint? All reply's would be great help. Especially TEXASLAWMAN!

- You don't need to go to bare metal. Sand the paint down with 150-240 grit paper. If your 80 has clear coat, make sure you get all of that off.

- a whole car would take a few hours to roll.

- You have to wait at least a day between coats.

- Plan on at least 6 coats of paint to get good coverage.

Hope this helps:cheers:

Thanks 5280Hawk! Another question, doest it matter on temperature outside, how warm/cold should it be out?

Im doing mine outside and its a pain right now. Its been too windy all week to work(I live at the beach so sand is blowing) and now the pollen is starting to fall. I am trying to convince a friend who is an apartment manager to let me borrow one of their garages so that I can finish up.

hey I haven't read all of the posts in this thread............but I was researching doing this with my chop top 60 and went ot Sherwin Williams and they have a in house brand of "rust paint" that they can color to any color you want...........I asked about rolling a car and he said if you can do it with Rustoleum you can do it with this paint, maybe an idea for all you guys having trouble matching the paint.

Another bit of advice I have learned....skip the quart and go straight to the gallon of paint, especially if you are using custom color matched stuff. Even using the code they produce there will be slight color variations sometimes. Ask me how I know.

just started doing some fenders in the basement today if it comes out alright i will do the whole truck i will post some pics of the fenders later in the week when they are done, im hopeing it comes out as well as texaslawman's truck :D

I did this several years back on a VW microbus and it looked great. I think I will try it on my ole 4-Runner.

I started on the top of my 40 today. Hit it with the orbital sander to take of all the old wax and scuffed up the old paint. Gave it a quick hose down and wiped it with a towel. Next i gave it a tac-cloth wipe down. Mixed Rustoleum glossy white with 50% mineral spirits. First coat went on with bunch of bubbles. I blew on them and they popped. Second coat after waiting 5 hours. Now to let it sit over night. I'll be wet sanding it in the morning with 800 grit. The two more coats if time allows me. If this works out I'll be doing whole 40 if I can find a ACE that would color match my old paint.
Stay tuned!

This thread is useless without roll on paint pics.

X2. A gallon is cheap enough anyway.

I thought about the photo thing but.....I thought you seen one roll on job you seen them all. Did 2 more coats. Had to paint outside due to construction going on at the house. Paint bubbles didn't pop as easy and i was left with chicken skin. That didn't stop me I painted another coat 5 hours later. I'll let it dry overnight and give it another 800 wet sand.
This time I'll take pics for those who are dieing for paint porn.
This time I'm painting inside.....I had better control of the paint that way. But I think this thing might work! It's going to take some time and effort but the quality of finish depends on how much sanding and painting I want to do.
Spoke to a paint shop guy in my neighborhood. He said Rustoleum will be going over to water base paint. No more enamel! He said automotive paint will be going water base also. I don't know if I can find someone to color match my 40 in time before they stop making it.

hhmmmmm . . . tempting . . . not sure i want to jump into that yet . . .

Here is a pic after 800 grit wet sanding after I washed it and wipped it down. I'll try to post more later. I didnt get anything done today.
