Tesla style head unit - has anyone seen this?

So, I've been lurking here hoping someone else would jump on this and be the guinea pig. I got impatient and ordered one from China yesterday. Should have it late February (they're on break for the lunar new year). I'll update y'all on how the install goes and the functionality once it's up and running. I absolutely hate the HVAC/Nav/Stereo interface on my 2006 but love everything else about it. Hoping this new unit will help. Heads up all. There has already been 1 attempt at bring the 03+ into the future and it sounds like is was a pretty crappy way to go. You can check it out here.
I'm sceptical, but if it is proven to work id much rather have an Android system than the stock nav unit.

I read that thread a while back and it aroused my curiosity. So, I ordered a unit directly from China and wanted to see if it would work - installed in my '03 LX. It has a few drawbacks, but still much better than the antiquated factory system. My speakers were upgraded at the same time along with a sub running off the factory amp. I am about to figure out a way to install an aftermarket 5+1 amp to run the system and do the speakers justice.

After seeing photos of this newer unit, I might install it in my '05 for comparison. We shall see.

Here are photos of each screen...

Could you please send me a link for that head unit? I can't find it for the life of me. I need one for my 05 LX470.

I believe you'd also have to purchase some Land Cruiser trim/vents in order to install a "Tesla style" head unit into a LX470

Looking forward to this update! I'd have to say, if there was one thing I would complain about with the 100, it's the Nav/Head unit limitations for aftermarket options.

What were the biggest drawbacks to that unit?

The controls are not very intuitive for the average user. If you are the only driver of the vehicle, you can learn the system and how it works in a short period of time. However, if you have others driving the vehicle, as I do, frustration leads to them turning the system off or leaving it on whatever is on. That can vary all over the board, but something to think about.

The usb function for my iphone does not want to work. I can play music via bluetooth, but the quality is not as good as a hard wire. I use bluetooth in town, but on longer trips I hotspot my phone via wifi to the unit and use the apps in the head unit. This is really cool because you have a fully functioning android tablet at your disposal. Many football games on espn while on the road.

The units are in metric.

Installation for some may be a drawback. For me it was not, but people with little experience in car audio might get frustrated.

That said, I am happy with the upgrade and would never go back. I will eventually install one or the tesla unit in my 2005 in the future. The amp died in my '05, so I will be transferring my '03 amp currently running my system into it. I will be installing an aftermarket amp with this system to see if it works, unlike the stock system from what I understand. I read somewhere the stock unit communicates back and forth with the stock amp. If it is not wired to do so, the head unit will not work. The Naviav unit I have may not be affected i this same way. Not sure how they programmed the system to work with the factory wiring. I have component speakers and a subwoofer installed in my '03 and the factory amp is anemic for that job. The near future will tell the tale.

i ordered one of these from alibaba for $435 shipped airmail to the US. ill install it and report my findings. 04 LX470. I did have to order the vent side trims from a Landcruiser, since the radio surround is different. that was $100/pair from a junkyard.

Cool thank you.

I've seen mention these head units only work in 03+, but this one claims 02+ Zhifang Factory Tesla Style Android Vertical Screen Car Dvd Player Gps Navigation Of 2002-2007 Land Cruiser Lc100 - Buy Zhifang Factory Tesla Style Android Vertical Screen,Tesla Style,Car Dvd Product on Alibaba.com. Curious if any '02 folks have successfully installed this thing?

Also, for those that have installed a similar unit in other years, is it plug and play or does the harness need adaptation?

They say "2002", but mechanically I don't see how that would be possible.

If you look at this post:

It has visual examples of what this device will fit, and what it won't fit

japan uses year produced instead of model year. so they are usually a year ahead of us since the 03s started production in 02 as an 03 MY in the US.
