Love this thread.

Why are you mounting the winch in the cab?

Have you considered a reciever hook up? You could mount square stock front and back (and on the sides) and slide the winch on wherever/whenever you need it.

Not to interject into a great fab project. Really cool build (aside from the slave labor- cheater :D).

todd forgot his camera.

We got the b-pillars, and the PITA a-pillars done. and Todd worked on the nose so we have something to tie this into once we get up front.

Its going to be a nice cage me thinks!

IMO its harder to find a reason to mount the winch to the front bumper. You lose approach angle, hang 100+lbs (of winch and bumper) over the front wheels, expose the winch and rope to the elements and scumbags with sticky fingers. If its in the cab the driver has control over the engagement, the spooling, heat monitoring. It keeps the truck more balanced. If you wanted to you could interupt the path of the cable with 2 pulleys and capture the front axle to control sinch down (wish I could).

And as his winch bitch (90% of the time) I VETO the hitch idea, and the places we wheel a hitch winch would not work. Alot of the time we are in deep canyons and the nose is burried in the ground or the wall, plus most of the time you CAN NOT walk these trails, let alone carry 100lbs to a hitch. And many times you cannot get the doors open bc these canyons are tight.

I also like the idea of being able to reach the controls from the driver seat. There have been a few times where I'm in the seat trying to hold the rig, someone walks my cable to a winch point and one of us has to get back to the winch to flip it into gear.

I can see and control spooling in the cab too. That cost me a broken winch last time out.

I'll sure feel a lot better about leaving my rig on the trailer in Attica or outside the shop in the weather.

Pics later this morning.

Maybe not this morning.

Not too many this evening either. I meant to take pics of the cable locker I finished up this morning. It seems to work really well. I also finished up the knuckles so it's sitting on the wheels again. I dropped in the radiator, hooked up the hoses and the trans cooler too.

This afternoon I mostly worked on tube.

It goes slow. It doesn't seem like I got very far.

Hows that techno blue going to look on the front of the 45?????

Hey todd, are you still planning on being in the shop tomorrow. I thought i would stop by and help with the cage.

And mooch your tire machine like a bum

fixed

yup. I'll be there. I want to have it running before you whippersnappers get out of bed. I'm wondering if I can get it trail worthy by next Thursday.

I just ordered the fuel cell. If it gets shipped in a timely manner I might be in good shape.

scored some hubs too. Woo-hoo!

Found the electrical problem. It had an open wire in the power to the fuse box. Hooked that up and it cranked up fine.

Wired up the fan switch and relays and was cleaning up the wiring when 4rnr and BAMF showed up to work on the cage.

We got the front mostly done. It took some debate, but I think we got it right. It needs a couple of gussets.

The lathe mounted notcher worked pretty good, but was pretty rough on hole saw bits.
