I would add a VSS, it’s too easy not to. You have a 80 rear axle, right? Just throw an 80 abs sensor in it and hook it up to the two wire VSS connection from your PCM. Works great for me on my manual FJ62 and my BMW with a TH400. I can get you the wire colors to use.

Backfiring through the intake is running lean. I might look at fuel pressure. I'm thinking the pump might be weak from sitting. They don't like that. Vss isn't the problem for sure. Its not had one in a long time. The one in my 45 died too and it has power well above 1600 rpm.

Do you recall what the fuel pump is out of so I can track down a replacement?
