What keeps some of you 40 drivers from going long distance in them? I don't mean expedition type drives, but 2-5 hour runs? What are the pros/cons/problems? Just wondering.

I really don't have a huge problem going 2-3 hours in it. It's only that I haven't taken the rig out except on short trips. I am somewhat concerned of its ability to function on the highway at such revolutions/minute, cool itself etc.. I'd do it if I had someone w/ me / behind me if I got in a bind. Personally, they just weren't built to go 70mph for 2 hours at a time. Therefore, I'd end up going 55mph or so...that sucks. I'd do the Holly beach thing w/o hesitation.

Having said that, even if I had an 80 or an FJC, I'd still worry about being stranded if I broke something on the trail.

Theriot's rig has proven itself reliable to him.. and I know he'll put his $.02 in but I don't have Theriot's rig.

me!

lol my right foot. with the angle of my leg and the angle of the gas pedal at 70mph, my foot is pointing as far up as it can go. after more than 45 minutes or so like that it starts to cramp up and hurt. i need cruiser control

Yeah, I should have added getting the hell beat out of you... but that doesn't matter to me too much.... it's the time factor at 55mph

well i guess i would win the iron ass award for traveling long distance in some of my cruisers. i took my 85 fj60 as far north as western canada in the dead of winter backwoods snowboard heaven no problems. i also have taken my 93 fzj80 on numerous trail runs (razorback ramble) with not even a lick of doubt as to coming home in one piece. landcruisers rule the world literally every continent. land rover cannot even make that claim...........

yes it is me i am back.......... hide the kids hahahahaha. i am taking delivery of my next rig at the end of the month listed as built fj60 in the vehicle sale section of this glorious forum.

Welcome back Dan

You sure did put a ton of miles on that 60...I especially enjoyed when you had the old school reall buckshot mudders on it...driving the mudholes on the levee during heavy rainstorms as well as sideways thru trails in Forest Hill, etc..

As far as traveling highway speeds, etc. Your rig has to be made SAFE FIRST. Brakes top notch. Steering re-vamped. That said, the 1979 onward (all models...40's, 60's, 80's, 45's) have 3.73's.

Finally, you can't have it all (Unless you build a transformer)....an d FWIW, just enjoy the ride....take the back roads...take it easy...leave early.....enjoy the scenery...it doesn't have to be a race...BESIDES, the back roads have all the goodies AND more stops and places to get help, etc...

yeah just buy an fj cruiser.........ha ha yes mike is right or put a damn h55 five speed to atain the desired speed. i had a prowned mike 1972 fj40 awesome truck mechanically. non usa carb and dist. set up that truck with split rims and 33 inch goodyear mtr's mind you it had a three speed easily went high way speeds 70'ish.

wait till you see this new monster i am about to unleash on the club. 85 fj60 4inch lift, 35 bfg mud terains, snorkel, safari gaurd bumper, and a winch..... ready for a five speed(saw them for 795.00 usd at man a fre) and arb lockers.

The suspension will beat you to death, cramping of the legs, terrible gas mileage, and unwanted wear on my drivetrain. To make these long drives all the bugs need to be weeded out and in top running and operating condition if you don't want any breakdowns.

I got to drive the 40 today. The steering was much tighter, but i still have that popping noise. The center arm does not move like it was before so the rebuild fixed that. I did notice that the tie rod end on the passanger side is the one that is popping and not rolling smoothly. I'm thinking that the little bend that I have in the tie rod is miking this happen. Does anyone have input on this.

Would have to look at it bud, was the tie rod end very loose with alot of slack?

I was looking for, and found the mechanical explanations of the reasoning. I know they can do it if you have it finely tuned. They are 30 or more years old and the speed limit back then was 55 and a 40 really wasn't made for highway work anyway.

Good info guys.

Ok got up from my big chair and got off of my big a-- and went and put my hand on the tie rod. It rolls forward and back just like it does when I turn the wheel. It even makes the same noise. Does this tell me that i need to replace the tie rod end?

Thats where I'd start bud.

maybe not our highway speeds but the fj40 will travel harh terrain on all continents. come on guys we drive the best that man has created. let's sound somewhat adventerous...............

I totally agree on the toughness, the capability and adventure but 30 years later I'll trailer it and let the adventure begin there. Driving a 40 on Louisiana HWY's and roads is worst then some 3rd world country's. :frown:
