Just picked this 2009 Tacoma. It looks like a really nice truck and I am having them put those laces in...those wheels will be for sale soon.

I'll drive it for a bit and decide what to do with the 80.

Thanks for the information and pointers - Jacque was a huge help too.

Good looking truck! I can think of one guy who is probably drooling over the thought of pimping those wheels!

It wouldn't be the same guy who is currently pimping some wheels. If my 80 series OEM wheels come out fantastic from Champion Beadlock, I am going to try and find a set of factory 16" Tacoma wheels and ahve them converted as well.

See the wheels on my old truck? Those are TRD FJ Cruiser wheels. I think they look damn good on the Taco.

Funny, the truck looks as high stock over 265's as my old truck did with OME and 285's.

Put the 80 wheels on the taco. They are better made/looking than newer taco wheels.

With 255/85/16 km2

Very nice Tacoma! Let us know if you decide to sell the 80.

I know this is your local forum, but I owned and wheeled an '06 double cab for 4 years so I thought I'd chime in.....

I ran 285's and 255's on it, 3" lift, sliders, bumpers, M8000, and belly skids (Budbuilt). Like most "new things", people tend to say the older ones wheel better, look better, do X better, etc. I'll tell you that I wheeled mine all over Moab and Colorado, and daily drove it in between. These trucks are by no means flawless, but it's very capable and has its advantages over the older Tacomas (and other rigs). My take on the pros and cons:
Pros:
- Interior is comfortable and roomy, especially compared to the older Tacoma
- CV axles are pretty strong for 33 or 34" tires. 35" and bigger and you are starting to ask for trouble.
- low center of gravity and pretty light for its size
- 4.0 V6 is a nice engine with good power
Cons:
- long wheelbase (almost 130") makes for some breakover issues. Sliders are a must
- weak ring gear? (I never had any trouble though)
- hard to seal up and secure the bed for long term travel

The last point is why I ended up going back to a wagon. A Wife, 2 growing kids and a full size dog - so we started to outgrow the Tacoma.

Enjoy the new truck. I love my Cruisers, but I do miss the Tacoma.

Good thorough post there!
I've wheeled with plenty of tacos. Still do... and am going to the SETO in Tracy City Sept 2-5 (ya'll should all go!). A taco will go EVERYWHERE the 80 sheetmetal will go.

Jacket, thanks for all the information...I really appreciate it. I am planning on setting the truck up as follows (thanks to Jacque and his recommendations): super charger, Icon suspension (coilover, billet upper control arms, and remote reservoir shocks), ARB front bumper with M8000, Slee Sliders, CBI Fabrication rear bumper with swing-out, jerry can carrier, and hi-lift mount, baja rack for factory roof rack (had to order the factory roof rack), ARB front locker, re-gear to 4.56, Bud-Built skid plates, and Safari Snorkel.

I want to set it up close to my 80 and be able to still wheel level 3 trails, but I want to be able to put a RTT on the bed rails so that I can easily access it. We will see how it works out...I just got a price quote on bed drawers from Truckvault for their extreme drawers (you can put 2,000lbs on top of them), which are weather proof...pricey but, they may be the storage solution I am looking for.

Will 80 series wheels fit a 2009 Tacoma?

Congrats Mark...that will be a fun mod/build process and a great truck!

plus I don't like the idea of 2 broken leg's either

I like those wheels, but if 80 series wheels will fit...I will stick the ones I am having converted to beadlocks right now at Champion...that would be sweet.

The truck is currently rolling with 285/75/16's so, that was one reason I hopped on it...BFG AT's to boot and it looks like they have 90% tread left on them. I may sway them out for BFG MT's or the Goodyear Kevlar MTR's but, I am going to stay in the 33' range.

Cheers.

Thanks and I am going to try and keep my legs "unbroken" for awhile...or at least that is my plan.

They fit perfectly. A better backspacing for bigger tires.

Agreed. The 80 wheels would be a perfect fit for 285's, and would help give some clearance so that you don't rub the UCA or frame up front. I had some 16x8 American Racing wheels with 4.5" of backspacing that I ran with my 285's. I'm sure they'd work with 255/85 tires as well, although I ran a set of 16x7 steelies with those tires.

I always enjoy a good project...

You will love the taco aftermarket, mark! You will need airbags or helper springs just for all the stuff you attached to it!
