Tacoma Brake Booster in FJ55?

GM makes a brake booster called the Hydraboost. It uses pressure from your power steering pump instead of vacuum. It's very compact and powerful as it was meant for diesels and bigblocks
As cool as this is, I have some trouble going this route. I had a PS fluid line bust in snow last winter in the work truck. This resulted in NO brake booster and NO steering. WORST COMBO EVER!!! IMO of course.

You also need the PS pump to start with, I don't have one on any truck yet.

Are you all running discs up front? I'm looking for a (cheaper than OEM) replacement booster for my '74 pig, but I still have drums all the way around. Already replaced the master. Any suggestions?

Same here Beast. My FJ55 has all new shoes, lines and such. However, I am leaking at the Master. Where did you get your master and how much $? I am thinking about replacing the booster as well if I can get more braking power.

Two questions:
1. Where is the best place and price for a Master Brake Cylinder (1974 FJ55)?
2. What is the part number for an upgrade in booster that will fit it?

Thanks!

Cruiser Dan at American Toyota will hook you up.
Tell him Pablo sent you.
Before you call, see if you can upgrade to an 80 series 4 wheel disc master for your drums, much more available!

Just got a stock replacement master from the local auto parts store. Think it cost around $40.
Hit the local u-pull-it place yesterday and got a 95 4runner booster. Bolts right up to the firewall and master, but has a bigger diameter so has some clearance issues. Spacing it out with some washers, but now have to figure out how to adjust the stroke for the difference.
Someone else asked about plugging the vacuum line...do I need to do this?? Engine won't run with the vacuum line attached to the booster, but seems to run fine if I clamp the line. I thought all boosters needed to be hooked up to the vacuum system...can someone explain this to me?
Thanks!

The booster won't boost without vaccuum. The diaphram in the booster may be leaking. The engine should run fine with the vaccuum line hooked up because the booster is basically a metal can with a rubber diaphram stretched across the center. It does not creat a constant vaccuum leak which would cause engine running problems.

My stock booster has the removable plastic check valve but the 4runner booster is a sealed unit with no visible check valve. I was assuming that the check valve was built in, but perhaps I need to run one in line?? Otherwise it sounds like this booster is no good?
Thanks for fielding the juvenile questions!

Does not look like anyone with a Tacoma booster has chimed in here. Would really like to hear from someone who has put in a Taco Booster.

I am looking for a replacement for my 71 Pig and would rather not deal with fitment issues. Racer65 has OEM spec units, but they are a more expensive 3x than a junkyard 98-2000 taco booster.

Would really appreciate feedback if anyone has added a taco booster and can speak to fitment. Thanks!

'79 pig brake caliper upgrades

Recommendation is for a '94 non-ABS 4-Runner booster for dual diaphragm and good fit.

I'm using a 98 Tacoma booster and a T100 master. The problems I had were with the diameter of the booster. It hit the firewall lip on my 71 and comes close to interfering with the clutch master housing. I used a 1/2" spacer between the brake booster and the firewall, so it doesn't hit it and gives you some wiggle room to get the clutch master bolt in.

The check valve is internal in mine. I'll look for some better pictures.

Here's one of the spacer.

And a better one of the overlap of the clutch master bolt.

I am also interested in this I just updated to disc up front but want to change to a power brake booster and new MC. If the 4 runner one fits let me know. I have much better stopping power but would like to add power brakes.

I purchased what I was told was a 94 non-abs 4-Runner booster and it did not fit. The mechanic who attempted to install it said he looked at it and it indicated it was a 93, but not sure if that matters. I have not had a chance to look into it since he tried to install. Tech said that its overall diameter was too large and it hits the clutch master cylinder.

I wound up purchasing a new unit from Racer65. It fit perfectly but was 4x the price of the 4-Runner booster.

Mtkreitz,

Wondering if he tried a spacer, like I pictured. With it, you can get a bolt behind it for the clutch master. Pretty easy to make.
