I did run a search, but couldn't find much. I also posted this in 40/55 Tech, but have little response...

I've read about guys upgrading the FJ55 brake booster to a booster out of a mini truck. When I had an '85 4runner on 38"s I upgraded the OE booster to a '98 Tacoma booster and had superior braking.. So awesome in fact that a hard braking scenario to avoid certain death on the freeway one time caused a slightly fractured front leaf spring to break.. That's some sweet stopping power.

So, if the mini truck booster can replace the FJ55 booster, can I then just jump up to a dual diaphragm booster out of a '98ish Taco? Or a booster out of a 2nd gen 4runner - which can also work in the mini truck with no clearnace issues.

Thanks

-Jason

PS.. I ask this because I'm pretty sure that my pig's booster is leaking, and I want to fix the issue before it damages my #6 cyl.

I would be interested in this also. Especially since I have a 2nd gen parts 4runner. So I can definitely use the booster out of the 4runner? Bolt in?

The '98 V6 Taco booster was a bolt in operation into my '85 4runner. The only issue that I ran into was the outer lip adjacent from the steering shaft needed to be clearanced about 1/8-1/4" with a pry-bar. No big deal there, it worked like a charm, and I had incredible braking power. It was suggested right after I swapped the Taco booster, that a 2nd gen 4runner booster will bolt right in as well and not require the little bit of clearancing. IIRC, the 2nd gen booster is not a dual diaphragm though..

So, in theory the '98 V6 Taco and/or 2nd gen 4runner booster should bolt into replace the 55's booster so long as the OE mini truck boosters are easily swapped into the pig; because I swapped the later Taco booster into my '85 4runner.

Right? :)

and to complete the theory,,,, i run a mini truck booster and master in my pig and it fits and bolts up. so,,,, theory says yes, lets find out for real.

Bolts up or bolts right up? Is it the SAME bolt pattern, or is it CLOSE? Good work you guys, keep it up...

If you're going to get that good braking out of it you might want to replace the rest of your flexible brake lines. Gearing down hard at the Relic Run after a blown soft line is one thing, doing it in rush hour traffic could be a little more interesting!!

Good point. My rear is done, and the fronts will be done when the knuckles get some love- soon.

^ I'm on it.. Payday is comin up and the wrecking yards are a few miles from my house. :)

Sweet man, let us know!

I used an 82-85(think those were the years) booster in my FJ55. I used an FJ80 master (I believe)

What year 80 master did you use? I will keep my rear drums, but I swapped a '76 disc front end under my '74 Piggy. It would be great if there were an off the shelf 80 master to support that!

So when one upgrades the booster in the 55, do you just plug off the vacuum line?

Don't all boosters need the vacuum?

i didnt realize there was a difference, but i would say bolts right up as i dont remember doing anything to make it fit.

you dont plug the vacuum line.

3rd gen 4 runner is another option for master cylinder.

Front disc, rear drum? What D is bore?

I've got a friend running an 80 series master and booster in his '70 40. Should be the same pattern as the 55, right?
