I just bought a 97 40th aniv. edition im looking to make it a trail rig that I can drive everyday? Anyone have any sugestions on where to start. Im also looking for some mean bumbers too.

I am real happy with the OME 2.5" lift Medium springs. After I installed the bumper and the winch, I just added 1" spacers on the front for $20. Look at my ROTW link to see how it looks. I took it to Moab last year and it performed great.

FAQs first; Search second!

Welcome!
you may want to introduce yourself a bit.

we don't do "mean" here, btw, only "rugged"... :)

Also search on "ROTW" in this forum to see what others have done. It should provide you with a good starting point.

Trail rig .. it means the most taller tires that you can pay .. :D

Welcome dude .. just star with 6" slee kit :D

2.5" OME's are for sissies .. plain and simple ;p

Go 6, or go home ..

Read my 6 inch suspension thread .. the guys love the ride!

What is this forum becoming like a couple of the chevy forums, if your poser rig isn't like my poser rig, your a sissy? :flipoff2:

My wheeling experience may not be as extensive as yours, I am only able to get out there a couple of times a month, but, I am very pleased with the performance of my OME suspension, both on and off road. It rides and flexes well and I am not looking for anything stiffer.

Gee Ty

First you say "Mods suck"

now you say "2.5" Lifts are for sissies"

do I have to get the 5 font out again?

I love my 2.5" lift. Worked great in Moab, works great on the trails here in Colorado. I do not use it as a rock crawler though. If you have a family, a 6 inch lift makes it harder for the wife and kids to get in and out.

But the main point is what are you going to use the rig for. If you want it for intermediate type trails, the 2.5" is fine. If you want to be able to do the harder trails and climb rocks, then it may not be the best choice

I put the Slee 4" suspension on a few months ago and hooked my 5' 2" wife up with this little baby for Christmas.

I've got 2.5" OME Heavy Duty springs on the Cruiser I drive every day (it gets far too many highway miles and too few off-highway, to be honest), and I can vouch for their practicality on a daily family driver, if not their offroad performance.

My 80 drives better on the highway than it did with the OEM springs.
I can still fit into my garage and the vast majority of parking garages.
My wife and kids (the ones old enough to walk, anyway) can get in and out without a ladder, but it's a bit of a climb for the elders in the family.

*Important note: I've installed the OME caster correction bushings, and I've got a burly front bumper and winch to preload the heavy duty springs according to their design.

Have fun and happy searching.

Being a self professed poser, I fiqured I could get away with a 'lil poser humour. :D

I only threw it out there for shock value .. who knows if the guy is going to be the type that knows his s***e in a short time, and wishes he had gone all the way up front. Maybe save him some $$ in the long run. Not huge odds, but the possibility exists. ;)

I dunno. I've wheeled my 80 enough to get bored with it. I hit a lot of trails with it while I had J springs and 36's. Wasn't much the truck couldn't do.

Personally I would advise to do the standard OME 2-1/2" lift, run 285s, some sliders, front bumper (don't even really think anything other than OEM bumper is necessary) then add a winch. This will keep it great for daily driving and still allow you to do some sick wheeling. I really see no use for a 6" lift other to say you have one.

...
definitely read the FAQs though - especially the thread about most bang for the $ thread when it comes to mods.

Keep in mind when lifting a truck to adjust the LSPV - load sensing proportioning valve and you should consider extending the brake lines (rear at least - front you can just slightly relocate the hanger).

... and :flipoff2: welcome :D

LOL!........:D

I have talked to your wife before......

I bet you get an ear-full every time she climbs in....

The other thing to consider is that you don't have to change much with a 2.5" lift. With the bigger lifts you need to start worrying about new driveshafts and other items due to the different pinion angles.

I concur.
For the more expedition type driving I am doing -in contrast to technical rock-crawling- I have also concluded that the soft spot in terms of utility vs cost is the 2.5" and not even the Js at that. Primarily because of the lack of other mods needed and less chance of trouble like DS vibes. That's what I'm in the process of doing myself.
