I just ordered what Nay got for 164.35 shipped from techronics.com. He's worked out the mounting and it's a known good fit which is worth something as far as I'm concerned.

If you go with the Blaudbunkt let us know how it works.

not a bad plan :D I sometimes like making things difficult on myself :D

I'm looking to order the Dynamat, too, and want to get the right stuff.

I think Home Depot has some stuff like Dynamat, thats the same thing and 1/3 the price. I can't remember the name of it tho. If you search on mud, I think someone says what it is.

Did you order online or call?

I don't think I will have too much to worry about when it comes to wiring! I'm guessing that my rig only has the base speaker system! Hence, no factory sub and the other thing that makes me think that I have the standard setting and not the optional audio package is the fact that I don't even have speakers on the driver or passenger doors! My speakers are kinda on the lower part of the dash board! Here are a few pics to check out!

You should remove the front and rear door covers and check if the wiring harness and plugs are there.

Knowing how Toyota assemble their vehicles for the overseas market I bet your cruiser have them.

And the round speaker hole should be there on all 4 doors.

I ordered on line and then received three phone calls through out the night to confirm payment, address and then to be told they were out of stock.

What a bunch of numb nuts. Probably sold mine while they were dicking around with the first two calls. I paid with paypal, how difficult can it be to just ship my stuff?

I wish I'd seen this a little earlier. I just ordered the sub and some 4 inch speakers from them. I got a phone call a couple of minutes later and the dude said that they were confirming, etc and they were in stock.

I'm always suspect of places like this. Maybe it will come through.

I ordered the KSC-SW1 online this morning also and got a call back asking if I wanted to upgrade to the newer model KSC-SW10 for the same price. He didn't say either were out of stock, and offered me the RCA cable with the KSC-SW10 as well.

Fingers crossed - sounds like these guys could bear some watching.

I just went back to their web site and they still list the SW1 as being in stock. They have to be purposefully altering the levels as it's computer automated and should be updated automatically.

And my paypal account seems to be in limbo as far as the payment goes. Not refunded or taken.

I was offered the same deal on the SW10 but by then I had 3 pints in me and sick of their incompetence and told them to cancel my order and be done with it.

For a cheaper, and arguably better alternative to Dynamat, check out this offering from raamaudio RAAMaudio - Quality and Value in Automotive Sound Deadening
I just installed components in the front doors and did the entire inner and outer door panels. This stuff applies really easily, and best of all the silver backing won't cut you like the Dynamat stuff can. An independent company did a test, and raamat came out as good or better than dynamat, but at a better price. I highly recommend it. My front doors let almost no road noise through now, and there are zero vibrations or resonances coming from the speakers at full blast.
FWIW, of the subs listed, I would stick with the Kenwood. Not that I think Kenwood makes good speakers, but of the three Kenwood would get the nod from me. The fact that it fits where it does, and is powered already, is a huge plus.
I hope to do a full write up of my Phoenix Gold 6.5" components powered by an old school Alpine 160w x 2 amp. With all of the sound deadening this setup absolutely sounds amazing. The clarity blows me away and it can make your ears bleed way before you notice even a hint of distortion.

Has anyone installed one of these subwoofers (or similar) using the factory head unit? I assume there are no RCA lines from the factory unit but what about using the speaker level inputs? Could you grab the wire from the upper rear and use that?

I just got an email telling me it's shipped, complete with a UPS tracking number. Nothing available from UPS yet - but that's not unusual.

rear powered sub

cool beans, r u running line-level or pre-amp out to the sub?
also, what's the sub look like with the panel over it? any pics?
thanks!

Nay,

I notice you have two types of Dynamat in the pics--is one the Original? What is the silver one? And does it matter? Did you just use what you had on hand?

I'm looking to order the Dynamat, too, and want to get the right stuff.

Thanks,

Sorry for the late response, I've been on business travel. The silver stuff is Dynamat Extreme. The tan stuff underneath that covers part of the metal is the stock sound deadener that was there for the stock "sub" - I just covered most of it up with Dynamat.

UPS just showed up with mine - Techronics came through!

I was surprised at the completeness of the wiring harness included. Probably won't get to it this weekend though - I ordered some fuse blocks that haven't come yet. If I'm going to pull wire to the back of the truck, I'm going to pull some heavy stuff and put in a fuse block, small inverter and some 12V and 120V outlets back there.

Nice, I just got off the phone because they hadn't released my funds after the cancellation. I guess it depends who's on the other end with that company. I bet I ordered mine before you did.

Line level to the sub via direct RCA connections. The panel looks exactly like stock with the sub behind it. You would never know it was back there until your music came on.

If you wanted to run this off the stock head unit, you'd just tap into the rear door speaker wires. The Kenwood unit is pre-wired for this - when you use RCA jacks you just tie those wires up and they don't connect to anything.

I got a brand new one off of EBay and it arrived yesterday. Nay can you give a little more detail on how you used the stock mounting and what length RCA cord did you use?

Also, how important is the dyno mat and if I do need to get some where should I look for it?

Well, I got mine in. I used the new model with the rectangular woofers. I got it in there with a bit of trial and error on the bracket bending/trimming. I didn't use dynamat or anything and I don't have any rattles, so I'm happy about that. I also put new alpine 4" speakers in the rear doors--which fit like a glove after a little modding. I have pioneer speakers in the front doors and I added a new kenwood head unit.

Overall, it sounds a lot better. Like was stated previously, the sub is not going to knock you out by any means. It does, however, add a little bit of punch out back.

give raamat a try instead of dynamat, cheaper and easier to work with, and every bit as effective. I've used both now, including an entire diesel truck floor w/ Dynamat, and both of my front doors inner and outer panels with the raamat. The raamat is much more forgiving and easier to apply. And IMO, sound deadening material, be it raamat or dynamat are worth the extra effort and cost. They keep out road noise, knock out rattles, and keep more of the sound inside the vehicle. If you can hear a lot of music outside your vehicle with the doors and windows closed, you are losing a ton of sound quality and volume.
Try the sub without any deadener first though, if you don't have any rattles and are content with the sound level and quality, maybe it isn't worth the extra effort and money.

Kenwood KSC-SW10

Why didn't you use the Kenwood KSC-SW10?

I installed the SW10 version today and it fit fine after bending the bracket ends.

And, I was able use the stock wires from the subwoofer amp connector for the power, ground, remote power control and rear door speaker signals to work the Kenwood.

This woofer adds the right amount of adjustable bass to the cruiser!

I have some McMaster-Carr sound/vibration damping sheets coming for the outer walls.

The stock connector to the OEM woofer amp has:

12v = Gray
Gnd = White w/ Black
Remote on = Red w/ Black
Rt spkr + = Red
Rt spker - = White
Left spkr + = Black
Left spkr - = Yellow
