I'm looking to upgrade my stock am radio to something a little more modern.....an am/fm with a tape deck. I am not going to butcher the dash, so that leaves my only option to find a stereo that fits. Most modern stereos are a little too wide and WAY too deep to fit.
I really like the idea of keeping a vintage look- i.e. manual tuning, shaft style. I hate all the lights and buttons on newer aftermarket stereos. Cassette would be cool because I've got tons of them and no tape deck in my new truck.

Any suggestions? What are you guys using?

If it comes down to cutting the dash or keeping the a.m., the a.m. definitely stays......

have a sony combo in ours......has knobs that you can turn + a nice casset player to use all those old ones that we like but no longer play; cost was around 25$ for it refurbished from a online dealer.....fit in the original tray perfectly :)

you can still find the old school '80's type with knobs and cassette, try crutchfield or something similar. might also just start looking around in various cars at the wreckers and see if anything appeals?

Howdy! I prefer my "surround sound" system. It only requires the ignition key and the gas pedal.

Four knobby tires
three whinney gear boxes
two burned out turbo mufflers
one breeze blowing thru the gaps

Sure sounds like music to MY ears!!

:grinpimp:

Myself, since the PO cut the radio opening bigger, I have satellite radio, integrated Ipod and standard cd player :D

It doesn't look great, but I have a fix for that, and 3' of aluminum is in my shop for it.

Bucket seats. Tuffy console. twelve disk CD changer. Two amps (one for the subwoofer). Four door speakers.

I played that tune for a while... but after a few hours at a time I always wanted to change the station!

Howdy! Yea, me too. I usually go into a drum solo for a while. First, it goes PSSSSSSSSST! Then, with a deep rumble (kettle drums?) it kinda starts out like: BUMP! thumpa thumpa thumpa BUMP! thumpa thumpa thumpa CLANG! I try to avoid those crescendos that climax in fireworks! I even get an oboe solo occasionally from the puckerbrush pinstrips. Someone with serious Audio Video talent could put together quite a symphony, ya know? John

O.K.- I think I figured out what I'm going to do. I'm keeping the stock a.m.- I love the fact that it is original and still works perfectly; and there is one classic country station that picks up pretty good.

So what I am planning on doing is mounting a small amp and two or four speakers and running my ipod directly to the amp. For that matter, I could use a portable cassette or cd player, xm tuner, whatever I choose, as input to the amp. It will be a completely seperate, second system that I can "hide" without messing up my dash or the stock look of my rig.

Anyone forsee any problems with this idea? Seams to me like the best of both worlds......

I did basically the same thing and I like the setup even though it was just thrown together. I tossed the new CD player in the glovebox and kept the stock AM radio in the dash. Best of both worlds. I hope to eventually rip the stock front bench seat out and replace with buckets and a center console. Then I will have space to store more crap in again...
