More info from my tech writer...
"We are going to be replacing the power steering rack and pinion assembly. As well as getting a fluid flush through that system. The timing cover re-seal is about 18 related parts and fluids. I don’t have an exact description of each part, just part numbers. All of which are gaskets and seals, like intake gasket, water inlet gaskets, FIPG for the timing cover itself. Valve cover gaskets, ect. Hopefully that helps. As far as anything that is not covered, there isn’t anything that the extended warranty did not cover. The inspection report we got from your initial service, all was covered. Not the filters, of course but you mentioned you would handle those. Warranty cost on the repairs getting done is upwards of $3000.00 (Warranty pricing is always cheaper than anything else). I haven’t finalized any paperwork so I do not have an exact number for total repair at this time. Just approved to do the work.

Any other questions, don’t hesitate to ask.

This is making my head spin...

May I know which extended warranty company you use? Thanks

One more email to add additional information as it is coming in. Note the pricing the tech writer is stating in the email:

"Once I have all the final paper work with all parts billed out then I will be able to decipher what the description is of each part. This is a very rare repair to have on this model but it is not the first time we have done one nor will it be the last. I have not visited the forum yet but do plan on peeking into it to have an understanding of related vehicles and what others are experiencing specifically to this model. Knowledge is power in this case, so the more I can learn, the better. I don’t feel that you have bad vehicle. It just happens to be one that was different. And not in a bad way. Variables come in to play when comparing one vehicle to the next. Location, conditions driven in, driving style, ect. Not that you have done anything to cause these repairs, they just can say a lot when comparing.

As far as your part owed, you have a $100.00 deduct. And that is all. Since the service and all repairs are covered by your car care plan and extended warranty, that is all that your bill will be at the end. Im happy that you bought this plan because it has made this really easy for yourself and not having to fish out $6000.00 for it. And also the company is very good to work with, quick and understanding.

I meant to look into the paperwork for my warranty last night but got side tracked installing the OS on a PC. I'll look it up tonight and post it up.

Check the cam towers for leaks very closely!!!!

$6000? WTF?

Yeah, I will see the total breakdown of parts and labor later this week. It will be interesting to see where all of that $$$ was spent!

I don't understand. Please explain.
Pull your sparkplug boots (or whatever the technical name is that escapes me until the coffee kicks in), look down at the plugs with a flashlight and see if oil is leaking in there. Common problem and not super easy to fix.

Well, right now the LX is at the dealer having the entire rack and pinion replaced, but I will be watching for leaks EVERYWHERE after this repair.

I'm not surprised. The warranty claim for my cam tower leak was close to $2k, 90% of that was labor. The part itself was about $5 (plus oil, coolant ect...). Dealer's labor rates are wild.

I'm glad that I got the Toyota Platinum extended warranty...

The front covers are known to leak along with the cam towers. As these trucks age this is becoming more common. Just google Toyota 5.7 oil leaks and you will be shocked. These are the same motor used in the Tundra and Sequoia.

The only real difference, and someone correct me if wrong the internals of one is cast and the other is forged...

This reseal is tons of money!

Can someone supply a picture that shows where to look for a cam tower leak?

If you're moderately comfortable turning a wrench it wouldn't be bad to diy. Just time consuming.

As a code monkey, I avoid complicated things like hammers. Wrenches are right out.

So I got my LX back last night. It looks like they replaced the rack & pinion to take care of the leak within the steering column. I have all of the part numbers but need to look at an illustrated parts breakdown to fully understand exactly what was replaced.

To get the steering assembly out, they were able to do minimal removal of various lines (no idea at this point of exactly what) without having to remove the engine.

With that said, the BIGGER cost item was actually the replacement of my seal on the timing chain cover. I have a long list of other seals that ended up being replaced just to get to that thing! It was leaking on both sides, but mostly on the driver's side (left).

I'll do a more comprehensive listing of what was replaced this weekend.

FYI... 1 day after getting the truck back, it went back to the shop.

It's leaking power steering fluid all over the front cross member. I found drips coming off the truck and drove it straight back to the dealer. They put it up on a lift and had me come over to look at the truck with them. It looks like at least 1 leak is a banjo fitting at the front of the assembly (passenger's side / right hand) that they just replaced, but the fluid went all of the way across the cross member and although we did not find a second leak, I told them to look VERY carefully! They are going to try and replace the washers and see if that fixes the leak, otherwise they are looking at replacing the steering rack sub-assembly again based on parts warranty... the saga continues.

BTW, I did look up my information on the Extended Warranty. Looks like I paid just under $3500 for the warranty, which is for 45000 miles or 4 years. That should take me to about 108K miles or 2019. The paperwork is showing over $4700 billed to the warranty company for this repair and the leaking timing chain cover.

I think I have gotten my money's worth on the warranty and I'm only half way through its life!

Here is a picture of the sub-assembly that Lexus replaced. The two connections at the bottom of this picture is where I believe it is leaking at this point. The boots areas were where the original had been leaking.

I looked it up last night and was going to bring it into work this morning but forgot it on the counter top. I'll post up this weekend. Tonight I'm going to party like it is 385 AD (St. Patrick's birth year).

Sucks that it went right back to the shop, but glad you had the warranty. Hopefully they get you squared away and you get another 100k+ miles before the next issue!
