for the last couple of weeks, 1984 4runner does not always want to start, some times it clicks a few times and then catches and starts,
i checked the voltage on the battery and it is 12.1, should be more, but it also should be enough to start it.
so i am going to look into it, any suggestions of where to start?

i have never checked/replaced the contacts in my starter.
i never had a problem with my starter till now!
would you kindly point me to where i might find out how to do this?

sorry 88 you can not reach my hand from your chair!

I'm sure it's the contacts, but I'm going to say this just b/c I have had prior experience with it.

Contrary to popular belief, relays can go bad and sometimes work and sometimes not work...

I musta asked a hundred guys and they all told me one thing, and that's relays don't "go out". They either work, or they don't work...

And I'm here to tell you that's not true.

So do the contacts, it's easy and cheap... Then if it persists, replace the relay.

oh, and don't you dare think about buying another starter (unless it's an AISIN:lol:)... An AISIN with 1,000,000 miles and new contacts is %100 better than rebuilt, reman, cast in China body and rewound in Taiwan starter...

Matter of fact, if you pull that one and find it's a reman, just promptly throw it over your shoulder and proceed to your nearest AISIN factory starter...

While toyota is better there is a few brands out there that are rebuild right here in the U.S

... or your battery cables are old and corroded....

I always start simple when dealing with starting problems. Most of the time I find it's a loose or dirty cable either at the battery or the starter. I would also check the wire to the solenoid on the starter and make sure the connection is clean there too.

I would do this first before looking at something more sinister like the starter itself. Pulling a starter from a 22RE is a royal PITA. I suspect your 22R might be the same.

My money would be on this... Tech Tip: FREE Starter fix - Pirate4x4.Com Bulletin Board

Starter probably works just fine, but Toyota wired up a Relay that does nothing. The wire that triggers the relay, is the very same wire that it draws power from.... After so many years, it can't push enough voltage anymore. Clip a wire, and power the relay directly off the battery.

i think it is my battery, i put the charger on it to day, the battery was only at 11%,once i charged it the truck started fine.
then when i went to unplug the charger i almost grabbed a black snakes tail.
