Hell of a party eh guys? LOL. Sounds like I should have been more patient and stayed at Little Gold Lake. I was sure that place wasn't going to work for so many rigs so I went with Plan B, Little Deer Lake. Nice option for setting up camp also. Anywho, here's all the pics, copy & paste from my build thread...
IH8MUD CAMPING TRIP SANS MUD MEMBERS
Well this weekend's trip WAS supposed to be the first annual MUD trip in the Lakes Basin area. Well it was, but I wasn't there, kinda. The plan was to camp at the Gold Lake 4x4 campground. As it turns out it was the Gold Lake minivan campground. Place was infested, all sites taken up and no Land Cruisers in sight.
@Fast Eddy was holding down the fort at Little Gold Lake but it seemed way too small to hold the whole group so I decided to set up shop at Little Deer Lake on the Snake Lake loop. Looks like I missed a hell of a party! I was hoping I'd see an endless caravan of Land Cruisers as they ran Snake Lake but I only saw 4 Toyotas on the trail, a 40, a 100, a Tacoma and an 80. Did get the chance to meet a few guys on the way out today. Next time I'll have to have more faith
Here we are laying claim to the nice site at Little Deer Lake
To this day Little Deer Lake continues to be one of my favorite lakes. Crystal clear, beautiful backdrop and very quiet. From Friday to Sunday we only saw 5-6 rigs drive by and a few bikers.
I had this lake all to myself on the kayak. When the winds die down the surface looks like glass
Home for the weekend
Just look at this lake. Look at it!!
That night I made a pathetic attempt at capturing star trails. This was a 30 minute exposure and hardly any light registered, just some faint trails. Screw this, I don't have patience for this stuff.
The next day we ran the full Snake Lake loop going counterclockwise. Didn't come across any rigs at all the whole time we were on the loop.
Coming up to Oakland Pond on the loop
This would be the last peaceful stretch of road we'd have
This is the top of Snake Lake Hill. Going counterclockwise you descend on Snake Lake Hill. They say it's easier, but with these heavy pigs it's a buttpucker rage the whole way down. Gearing on the trucks insn't low enough and while flooring the brakes the thing just slides down on the loose rock. I think I'd rather go UP this hill.
The official trail is the fork on the right but folks have been creating a bypass. The giant boulder on the right is very unstable. I could rock it back and forth while standing on it. Felt nervous trying to drive over it only to have it drag under the truck the whole way down. So I took the bypass on the left.
Pay attention to the big white boulder on the left
Remember that big white boulder? Well my rear tire clipped it and sent it tumbling down the hill, landing right in the middle of the steep ass trail. In the pic you can see it start to tumble.
LOLNOPE. That's not happening. Sorry guys, we tried to move it. So yeah, I'm the dick that put the giant boulder right in the middle of Snake Lake Hill, sorry
Only option was to drive around it. Luckily there was a ledge, but as steep as this descent it, it was not fun.
