Those freakin stairs!!! I was like nah, you guys go on up I'm cool down here on the ground, and then the kids just jammed up the stairs, so I thought to myself, self you gotta man up and follow those little kids up the stairs, ridiculous.

These little things?!

Its that third set that really gets me; nothing under you and the steps are spaced further apart!

I'm leaving at 5am tomorrow morning to go fishing up there in the area with my Dad and a few of his buddies, I'm sure a few of us will find the time to hike or drive up there.

Damn good views from up there though!

And a lift?

One thing at a time...

I just found out I'm gonna get to transfer to another location for work in 9 months and I'll cut out 60 miles a day from my commute. Then I'll get the lift...maybe.

jeez...25 rigs already signed up to go! this is not including non forum members that are coming up...its going to be absolutely crazy! don't forget the beer!

Just got back from the area a few hours ago, weather was AWESOME this weekend!

I drove back to the Gold Lake 4x4 campground on Saturday just to take a look and it seemed like it should work just fine for the trip so long as we can get the big spots at the back. The trail in had some rocks piled up in one or two of the harder spots so that should be good for the stock trucks. There was a lot of water on the trail this weekend which was cool too.

Yesterday I hiked 8.2 miles from Sardine Lake to Tamarak Lakes, which might actually be a better place to host this trip than Gold Lake! (easier trail in, less crowds, still plenty of room if not more than Gold Lake and lots of hiking/biking opportunities) Maybe next time; unless you guys want to change it now.

I'll try to have a few pics added between now and the next few days.

What's the drive into Tamarack Lakes like? I can see the trail on Google Maps. And I'm assuming you can't drive from Sardine directly to Tamarack? Looks like you need to take the trail northeast at Sardine Lake campground?

yep you are right on the tamarack lake trail. it is somewhat rocky but not bad and its a bit like the trail to upper sardine lake. last year I did the trail to see if I could get over to sardine but it stops at a point where it turns into a foot path somewhat. there are no amenities at tamarack so in all reality if this event becomes a yearly thing we should probably keep it at the gold lake campground. just my 2 cents

The trail your looking at is the one I hiked. It is not a passable by vehicle. The road to Tamarack lakes begins on Packer Lake Road and is visible in the upper left corner of the first photo.

Wow, that is an amazing spot. This is going to be blast.

Ok so where are we making base camp at again. Looks like it is going to be me and the BIL in my truck and possibly some friends with their toy jeep and toy hauler if there is room for that. We all went camping up at Lake Davis (just got back a few hours ago) and tooled around in the Grizzly Valley, Genesee Valley, etc. area with BeBe and their little jeep. I mentioned the trip to them and seems like they may want to join.

Had fun up at Davis Lake as we had never been there before and it was weird to us that it is "bear country" but there were no bear bins and people were leaving their stuff out all night. Anyways, definitely count me in, confirming with the BIL and possibly the friends depending on what the camp situation is like.

Oh and @The Machinist and @jcardona1 ..... looks like we are the big photographers of the group so we will have to collaborate on something with all the rigs and put the photos up on Flickr.

Since we are nearing our trip i would like to know where and how we are all going to meet? I know that a group is coming from the bay area and around Sacramento area and a few in between, are we going to split up in groups and meet at the camp? I just googled the campsite and coming from the bay area it looks like i have to take I-80 towards Redding i am not sure about this route or is there a place where we can all meet and go to camp at the same time.It would be nice to plan ahead now and have a back up plan of some sorts if needed.

Take I-80 to Aburn, then turn onto Hwy-49 and take that all the way to the Gold Lake Highway. I'm planning on leaving Thursday night after work with one other guy that I don't think is on 'Mud. Hopefully we can get up there and snag that big campsite early.

For the most part, just show up when you can. Feel free to arrange caravans if you guys want.

I'll leave this here:

@@matttaylor1976

I'll volunteer my place if any of you guys from the Bay Area need a place to stretch your legs on the way up, or if we need a rally point. I'm right on the border of Nevada City and Grass Valley (off 49). I've got plenty of parking, and gas on the way.
There is also a dirt lot right behind the gas station close by that we could fit a bunch of rigs. Let me know if that works, or if you have other ideas.

Directions:
12898 Madrone Forest Drive
Take 49 towards Grass Valley
Take the Brunswick road exit, make a right.
(gas now, or on the way down at the flyers on the right)
Continue on Brunswick for approx 3/4 of a mile, and make a Left on Idaho-Maryland road
Make a right onto Madrone Forest Drive (approx 1 mile up Idaho-Maryland)
Towards the end of the road, you will climb a hill that veers right, at the top, make a hard left, then an immediate right.
I am behind the wood fence, if you cross the creek, you went a bit to far.

Hey guys! Thanks for dropping me an invite. As of now I should be able to go. The only limiting factor for me will be my diesel swap.
I should have my 12HT in and de-bugged by the 17th or 18th, and this trip might be a great way to break it in!!!
I am coming from Marin County, so if anyone wants to convoy up with me let me know!
Im stoked guys, thanks again for the invite.

Great pics Darrell! The Forest Service site says the 4x4 campground has 16 sites. I've never been to Gold Lake so I'm not sure - can you camp anywhere along the lake or is most of the shore not accessible by vehicle? Meaning, are we restricted to camping only at those 16 sites at Gold Lake?

Its only in the general area of those 16 sites, but although their site says you can only have 4 (or however many the FS site states) vehicles per site, I've never seen some of these sites with less than that number. So although we are restricted to those sites, I don't think we should have a problem getting everyone in there. There is also Little Gold Lake that has two unlisted areas on its shore that can fit a fair number of rigs.

No way to get a toy hauler into this campsite. The road is narrow and very rocky. There may be a place to park it across the road from Bassett's if they're just using it to haul their rig, or they could get into a site at Pack Saddle Campground, which is a few miles away.

That sounds good Darrell,so now we need to find out if the folks from the bay area would like to meet somewhere along I-80 and head up to Sacramento to meet up any of the guys that would like to join the caravan.i am planning on leaving Friday morning as early as possible and meet up with a friend in Sac area and i know some of you would like to plan ahead on a trip like this.lets hear what you guys would like to do,i really hope this would be a successful meet up that we will repeat each year something similar to SnT.
