Sorry but am a tad confused. I was told the 60 diff was wider that the 70 on one side. Spring under required cutting the pumpkin to fit the narrower leaf spring points.
The diff are the same, the short side axle tube and shaft are longer. If you wanted to keep the 60 width then you probably will have to modify the diff housing, but then you probably would want to replace the rear too to keep same width.

I think he means he wants to use an entire FJ60 axle. The advantage is that it would be a couple inches wider, but not really worth the trouble in my opinion.

60 is wider and not worth the trouble of relocating your spring perches on the frame.

would not be easier to relocate on the housing ..? I mean I would not do it .. if I want wider housing, I 'll just add spacers .. or move to an 80 series set .. but that's another story ..

The 62 diff is in great condition, whereas my 73 diff has done 600000 kms.
I might just swap the guts , birfs and knuckle assemblies if possible.
The oil in my 73 diff looks like green pus. Something needs to be done soon.
It also clunks in 4WD.

If you are just swapping the the differential (3rd member) you just need to keep your inner axles and make sure you have a fine spline pinion flange with a drive shaft bolt pattern that matches your drive shaft.

FJ40 & BJ70 both SOA using OME & 6x Series front/rear axles. No outboarding required on the 7x, a little bit (3/8" per side) on the 40. I've never regretted the extra width.

On a side note, it's crazy to think that was 15 years ago
