Am thinking of putting a 60 front diff in my fj73 SOA . Can this be done without cutting into the pumpkin? I am ok with welding but a bit spooked by hacking the pumpkin/axle tube.

The diff are the same, the short side axle tube and shaft are longer. If you wanted to keep the 60 width then you probably will have to modify the diff housing, but then you probably would want to replace the rear too to keep same width.Sorry but am a tad confused. I was told the 60 diff was wider that the 70 on one side. Spring under required cutting the pumpkin to fit the narrower leaf spring points.
60 is wider and not worth the trouble of relocating your spring perches on the frame.
