Speed Gen assembly ?

Hi all
I am working on a 1975 fj55.
On the firewall is a box that the speedometer cable goes into and out of at a right angle.
If you take the cover off of the box there is an odometer inside.
Spector calls it a "speed gen assy"
What is this for?

It's supposed to keep track of mileage and signal a light on the dash for something

I think it was to activate the EGR light on the dash. Then you were to go to the dealer for service. In the late 70's, early 80's GM did the same thing. At 30k miles a yellow tab dropped down over the odometer that said catalysts and you had to go to the dealer for a wallet adjustment. GM service was to replace the beads in the catalytic converter. Does the mileage on the gauge match the odometer? It may reflect closer to the true mileage that the 40 has.
