So I had to go to a hotel for a work conference and the valet kid drove my truck into the parking garage at what appears to be full speed.

Obviously sub optimal timing at a risk management conference driving an attorneys car.

Anyways, they’re “fixing” it but I’ve asked for cash for replacement value. And now I’m torn as to whether I want a RTT on this truck. Honestly over the bed of my Tundra, I didn’t mind the RTT but on an SUV, it sure did make me feel top heavy. In some ways, I’m seeing this fiasco as a cost free but inconvenient do over on the decision to get a RTT for the LC.

So I’m looking at the Oz Tent Jet Tent Maverick. Anyone have any insight on those or any recommendations for a similarly easy to set up ground tent?

That will be an expensive mistake for that hotel.

Are you thinking of changing the wrap? Looks like it did its job and may have actually protected the paint.

Sorry to see this but I like your perspective.. making lemonade.

As to the tent.. the biggest problem, and how you'll likely realize you've been spoiled by sleeping on the rig.. no need to find flat/level ground that won't damage a tent floor.

Thanks man. Yeah it’ll be a new challenge for sure but I always looked for somewhat flat spots so I didn’t keep sliding down in the RTT. I’ll also be using a exped MegaMat so hopefully that helps. I have an 18 month old and it was a bear to get him in and out of the RTT on the LC.

Have you considered something like an XVenture or Patriot Campers trailer? I've done a variety of rooftop tents over the past 10 years along with several ground tents (Kodiak/Springbar and Oztent included) and there are always tradeoffs, and the tradeoffs are always highly personal.

I’d have nowhere to store a trailer at the moment. Maybe in the future. For now, a ground tent is easier because with an 18 month old. He’s in the sweet spot of too heavy to just toss on the roof and too young to climb up himself.

Yeah, I hear ya. We've had to develop a maneuver to get our dog up into the Stealth as well. If I were going for a ground tent today I'd either go with the standard Oztent. I've also heard good things about the Shiftpod tents but don't know much about them. The Kodiak/Springbar tents are pretty amazing in terms of quality and are easy to set up except the staking, which is a huge pain.

Yeah I’m debating the standard Oz and that jet maverick since it folds down to half the size. I figure I could pack it in the cargo area rather than the roof and keep the roof clear for solar. Unfortunately with the little one, I won’t be taking extended trips with the family any time soon. Mostly two nighters. Anything longer would be a guys trip and I’d just drive the pick up.

You’re considering throwing your 18 month old on the roof?? Hahaha!

Need a build thread. Your rig is outstanding.

Wha happened to he tail light?

There is one in here somewhere but I stopped updating it. Just look at @indycole build thread because I basically copied him other than the Tundra swap. And the tail light cracked when the top half of the tent flipped off the truck.

Bummer

On your question of tent. I originally had an Oztent, but that took up the whole roof. I now have a JetTent25 and it sets up about as fast. This is also by Oztent and a much cheaper version of the Jet Tent for almost half the price. This is what I would get if I was buying today.

Oztent Oxley 5 Lite Tent - OOL05TEFOA

Damn, I wish I saw this earlier. I already ordered this one:

Jet Tent Maverick

both look like really nice tents - i'd be happy with either
